Hey! I got my old name back! Anyone else?
Comments (7)I couldn't log in as uxorial during The Trouble, but since then everything's been fine. I didn't have any upper case letters in my name, so that wasn't affected. I've been wondering if the folks who were sent to Disney are able to sign in under their original name now. ?? Anybody know?...See MoreAnyone else manning their door?
Comments (42)There have been specific hours in the Chicago suburbs for decades. They are posted on signs in the towns and at schools and are listed in the newspaper. They are all in the same 4 - 8 p.m. range. If you welcome the kids, you turn your outside lights on -- and usually decorate, at least a bit. Kids aren't supposed to go to houses without welcoming lights. Halloween has become a lot 'tamer'. Before 'hours', Kids would ring doorbells from the time school let out until at least ten o'clock. The later it got, the more you were likely to get a 'trick' despite having given a treat. The earlier cut-off time has probably halted much of that behavior. When I was a child some brat pushed sewer slush (wet leaves and dirt) through our mailbox. (Our mail came down a metal chute from a flap on the exterior of the house to a little door in the front foyer.) That was a smelly mess to clean out. (That was a nothing compared to the kid who disconnected a neighbor's sprinkler one summer and shoved the running hose into her mailbox!) In 2001 DH and I had to park on the street where we rented a furnished apartment until our new house was finished. Ours was a more expensive car than most in that transient area. Our car was egged on Halloween....See MorePlease help, my old man cactus got mealy bugs
Comments (5)If only a few, swabbing with alcohol as mention is effective. I would pull it out of the pot and see if there are any bugs down below especially at the bottom. Use a strip of newspaper folded over 3 or 4 times to hold the cactus so the spines don't prick you. There are systemics, but I don't know anything about such chemicals....See MoreWhat's happening to my old man cactus ?
Comments (6)Usually rot will show up quite suddenly, all at once. I don't think a heat mat will be necessary- you need warm, not necessarily hot. I also don't think there is much need for a heat mat in general. Of course, it all depends on your climate. If you can, grow the cacti outside (once they are rooted) in full sun. To do this, you will need to acclimate them to the higher temperature and sun levels by leaving them outside for increasingly larger periods of time. In other words, slowly increasing the light levels. I would start only about 1 hour outside, progressing upward maybe an hour every 1-2 weeks, until you can keep them outside permanently (if your climate doesn't allow this, put the cacti in a south or westward facing window). Your problem with the rot was most likely overwatering. Although I am sure it didn't seem like you were watering much, with the soil that cacti usually come in (compost, topsoil, and usually a lot of peat), the top couple of inches can be bone dry, while in the middle it is extremely wet. That is what makes this kind of soil so undesirable. To test when to water, you could use a wooden skewer, and poke it into the soil as far as it will reach, and if it comes up moist, you will know not to water....See MoreLauren (Zone 9a)
