Lol, I hope you got 10% discount for volunteering there. Red and White garden sounds pretty. You'd need more than 7 to make a bed.....are you going to have red roses in the middle and frame the bed with white roses? You'd need more roses....... going back there for more?? :-)

I have a red/white/blue bed. Red & white roses with blue irises. Not just red roses & white roses, but red & white roses too. Seil's right, you need some that are red AND white combined, whether it's stripes, picotees, bitones, etc, etc. See... we're all really good at helping...

At least my husband didn't kill me. I have other Red and White roses. I have a mini red/white bed already with Whirlaway, Veterans Honor, Fabulous, with some red and white minis in front. I have PJP in another spot. My plan is to have Altissimo on one side and Frau Karl Drushki is already on the other side. In my climate, it grows like a climber and is already draping over one fence panel. Under neath Altissimo will be Bolero, which is the shortest rose. I'm not sure which of the reds I will put under FKD. I know that Moonstone and Mr. Lincoln will be in the middle because they are the tallest. I am worried because this new bed I dug out was just flooded by the 5 inches of rain we got the other day (my rain gauge was full!), so I have to let it dry out a bit. But that's ok. I want to get a soil test. I know it's 90% clay but I want to see the ph etc because this is one of the spots that was dug up when they did construction in my yard, so it has a lot of added soil from god knows where. I'm just ready to cover up this ugly fence,

Seil, I thought about doing some bicolors, but I wanted to keep it to solids. Earlier this year, I did buy Oklahoma and Olympiad from Lowes, so I will also add those.

I have some much to do in the yard, I must be crazy. But we are all a little crazy, right? I guess there could be worse things I could be obsessed with.

You won't get any help from me! Back when I started growing roses my yard was 5 acres and i started with HT's then added shrubs and rugosas (two rugosa hedges). Pretty soon OGR's took over part of the vegetable garden; my boys simply didn't eat enuf veggies to justify the huge garden I had..

When I moved I knew in my heart I'd probably never be able to grow that many roses again. So glad I did it while I could!

I have bought in twelve roses over the last two weeks. I had them in pots in the front garden growing on for the meantime but all the neighbours were commenting on them- how much I must have spent, how many I had bought etc. It's an English village thing to be in everyone's business. So I have hidden my 'stash' behind the house like a problem drinker hiding empty bottles :D

I suppose bare roots attract far less attention.

The roses in that nursery do look lovely, big pots and strong growth. How could anyone resist?

I can see why you got more... the roses look really healthy. You're so lucky... I don't have that kind of thing where I live - Rose Society or gardener sales. I'm creating a red and white area this year, too. Double Delight, Olympiad, PPJP II, Neil Diamond, Grande Amore, Belle Rouge and to add additional interest I plopped n Alec's Red, Fiji, Heart O Gold and Leda. Buford, I hope you post pics when they're blooming.

bryony - man, I would hate that! I really can't stand people criticizing me about things I love. I think you should try to be brave and stand proudly about your roses. But that's just me. :) What roses did you buy? Anyway - way to go starting your rose obsession!!

Wow... LOL Bryon! If I lived over there in the UK and had your neighbors... they'd probably be doing an intervention and sending me to the loony bin! What a bunch of busy-bodies!!

Bryon, are you in a retirement community? Some people have a lot of free time over there. :-) I can't put up with people like that, I'd spray them with my water hose, they shall be gone soon. Try that on a hot day, and pretend it just happened without knowing......they shall leave you alone. lol A good idea??

And remember, just because they ask questions about your roses (cost, etc.) doesn't mean you have to answer them. :)

I think I need help!

Some people spend money on coin collecting or the like, where they collect stuff and put it in their closet.

Roses are something your family, friends, neighbors, and all of us here will enjoy as we see your garden become more beautiful each year. Being a rosarian is like being an artist, except instead of oils and canvas we use roses and soil.

Thanks everyone. I was walking around the garden with my husband last night. Even he was commenting about how great the roses look. I think because the last 2 years I have been redoing almost everything. And my whole yard was dug up for construction and I had to move a lot of roses and wound up with a lot of new space. So I have about 170 roses. This is the first year that most of them have been in the ground over a year and will bloom well. It should be a sight to see!

I haven't planted the r/w bed yet. I'm getting a soil test done. I am testing 3 beds, the new one, another newish one and one of my oldest beds. I'm curious to see what the results are. Especially the two newer ones that are from the construction and have lots of back fill in them, and gravel. Oh, and the Olympiad I bought in Lowes is not Olympiad. It's some pinkish rose. Another mislabeled body bag :(

towandazz, I have Leda and I love her. I planted her two years ago, but this year she put on a lot of size and is blooming well. Here is a pic

You are going to LOVE Sugar Moon. You need one too, fragrancenutter. My only regret is that I didn't buy two when they were on sale last year. GeorgeB was really nice and healthy with good fragrance in 95 deg heat with high blackspot pressure last year in a regional garden. I was impressed.I
