I also have a lot of peas. I planted Sugar Snap on a cattle panel and they are about 6 feet tall now. I planted early and they made it through temps of high 20s with no cover. I took a mini vacation last week and when I returned I picked almost a gallon. I have had to pick everyday since. We like them raw or immature (snow pea style) for stir fry. We have put 10 stir fry packs in the freezer plus had all we can eat and I am still not keeping up. We had half a day of sunshine today, then rain, so I am sure they will be covered again tomorrow. They are very good tho! You can see the peas on the cattle panel here. I have two tomatoes that should be ready next week. My three earliest plants were in wall-o-water and are a couple of weeks ahead of my other plants. More sun and heat would be nice. Here is a link that might be useful: Pea Vines

So, doing some reading on MH and HPS bulbs I'm starting to realize my oversight possibly. I'm still a little confused as what I'm reading says that some people actually grow vegetative stages under an HPS bulb and some ONLY bloom under one. Well, I'm trying to go the most conservative method at this point and TRYING to avoid a two stage system as far as running TWO lights. I mean I can live with two stages of nutrient reservoirs BUT I really want to figure out a solution for lighting that isn't going to cost me a fortune running two fixtures. So, I guess my real question now is, CAN I grow EVERYTHING I want, bloom, vegetative, etc under one particular bulb? Like I said earlier, I can live mixing two different stages of nutrients but PLEASE help me with the possibilities of what can be done under one bulb. I'm really trying to keep a rotation of new plants and established plants and am trying to do this under one 1000 watt bulb if possible. Thanks so much for any input.

As a matter of fact, I did plant my beans just about 5 days ago. Not up yet but I'm hoping tomorrow they will break through. I think the little squirrels in the area may have found my peas,,I will check on them tomorrow, but I'v e seen the little demons scampering about the area. I always have to share a little of my garden with them. I used to have an old brown tortie cat and she would slay them and bring them up to the front door. She finally lived out her life of some 18 years, so now the little squirrels go their merry way. steve

NOW its got my corn!@#^*!!*#! I planted four 50' rows of sweet corn and covered them with remay held down at close intervals by rocks. When I lifted the cover I found that all but about 15 plants were gone and there were the same neat holes that I found with the peas. I have been planting the same way in the same garden for 30 years and have never had anything like this happen until I lost my second planting of peas earlier this spring. A summer without corn... ;-( As a result of the advice from "hemnancy" I covered my green bean seed row with fern fronds before covering it with the remay ...... NO LOSS!!!!! I've planted another row of beans with just the fern fronds as an experiment. No vole holes. Towhees are around but the remay was barely ruffled and all rows remained covered. I'm not sure I can buy the towhee theory...any other thoughts? jwww
