What about a museum tour? I'm not familiar with the museums in Austin and San Antonio so much, but Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth have a collection of air conditioned museums.

Houston has the Museum of Fine Arts, Contemporary Art Museum, Menil Collection, Museum of Natural History and Science (Home of the Cockrell Butterfly Collection, planetarium and IMAX theater) -- all in the Museum District which is south of downtown and next to the medical center and zoo. Bayou Bend is the former home of Ima Hogg and houses another collection and botanic gardens and it is not too far away. There is also a fire museum and a funeral museum -- never been to either of those.

Dallas has a group that pretty much parallels those in Houston and Fort Worth has the Amon Carter Museum, Kimbell Art Museum, Modern Art Museum, Texas Civil War museum, a cowgirl museum, science and history museum, Sid Richardson museum (never been there but the building with all the admin at TCU was named after him too).

I know the Rangers have a new stadium in Arlington, but I believe it is an open stadium, so and evening game could be enjoyable -- or hot. The Astros play at Minute Maid Park which has a retractable roof. I have been to more games when it is closed than open, though they sometimes start evening games with it closed and open it after the sun has gone down and it cools off a bit.

Ausston does have a number of resorts and spas if you just want to stay put and chill. San Antonio has a couple, but the only one I am familiar with is near the theme parks and not a destination unless you have young children, at least from my experience.

You could also hop a SW flight and go to New Orleans -- plenty to see and do there, though it might be harder to escape hot.

Since you are not keen on making this trip a combination wedding/family visit type of vacation, why not just go to the wedding and hightail it out of there?

Then plan to go someplace where you want be for the remaining days of the vacation.

It'll be hot, but IMO not unbearably so. Average high for early June is around 90 degrees, but you'll have some humidity as well which you aren't used to in your part of the country. Still, depending on what it is you choose to do, you could very well spend most of your time in nicely air conditioned buildings. I've only been to Austin for work-related events recently, and will leave the recommendations to those who know the city better than I.

I grew up, like you, in Oakland County MI. I still live in the Midwest. I despise 90F and humid.

My first trip ever to TX was to Houston/Galveston over July 4 and it was hotter and more humid than he!!. 100+ with humidity. Since that trip, short of someone getting married or dying, I will never go to TX in the summer again.

That said, I have not been to Austin. Generally, my thoughts are to go, do what you are obligated to do, and hightail it out as soon as you can.

I was in Austin a few years ago for work in either June or July. Temperatures in the 90s, but surprisingly not terribly uncomfortable. Austin isn't as humid as Houston, so with what you've said I definitely wouldn't choose Houston over Austin.

I didn't have a lot of time for touristing, but I did take a tour of the state capitol, and wandered to the Congress Ave bridge one evening to watch the bats emerge for the night.

But given how you are foot-dragging on this, the resort/spa idea sounds like a good one to me. Mostly staying in nice air-conditioned spaces...

It won't be that really hot until July and August. Austin has a very cool, urban vibe but drive twenty minutes and you in beautiful countryside. We have stayed at Barton Creek resort and it is very nice. The Hill Country is a short drive with wineries and little towns to "poke" around in. Of course you can miss Salt Licks Bar-be-que. Telling you about these things makes me think we need to do a weekend trip!

I live west of Lubbock and we've already had 90 degree days with no humidity that were miserable. It will be miserable in Austin in early June.

Have you ever been tubing on the Guadelupe River? I had so much fun doing that, I hope it's still fun.

I just got back from my first trip to Austin. It was a business trip and I added on a few days for pleasure. I took a tour of the state captol (more interesting than I thought it would be), and there are a few nice museums around the university. If you like music, there are many good venues. Walked around the river but missed seeing the famous bats. But all told, it was not a thrilling place for tourism.

If you do look for a resort around there, avoid the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines. I stayed there because that's where the business meeting was. It gets deceptively good reviews on tripadvisor, but it is just awful.

Lost Pines is near Bastrop, and is definintely over-rated. We thought the food there was horrible

I totally agree. It was the worst hotel food I have had in a long time.

Also agree that the Blanton Museum and the Harry Ransom Center were well worth seeing.

Bpathome has the very best suggestion! Tubing on the Guadalupe is pure hot & humid weather fun. You give up on trying to stay fresh and tube down the river with another tube that holds an ice chest full of beer. It's truly a blast.

My advice is a little bit different. It's going to be hot in Texas in June, not matter where you are in the state, so I wouldn't waste any time driving to 'slightly cooler' places.

I don't know whether the wedding is in Austin, or outside of the city, and that may affect what you wish to do, but anyway here are some thoughts....

We own a cottage in a fun resort development about 30 miles outside of Austin, which we rent out, but it's booked for June. The development is on Lake Travis, and has condo's, townhomes, cottages, and private homes for rent. The property has a couple of pools, a cafe, a workout center, and a marina all on site. So you could rent a place here and hang out at the pool while enjoying lunch and a marguerita! Or you could rent bikes (they will bring them to your house), or your can rent kayaks or a boat, whatever interests you. Lake Travis is about 70 miles long, so it is a very fun lake to explore by boat or kayak. Even on very hot days, as long as I'm on the water I feel comfortable. Another native here. I grew up in South Texas and have lived just outside of Austin for almost 30 years.

1) Maybe not hate yourself, but it'll be hot and humid. It's the humidity in June that gets me the most. Dress appropriately. Like cotton shirts and shorts. YOU WILL BE SWEATING.

2) For Austin, I think TexJan's recommendations are spot on. Add some food truck eating as well. My favorites are on South First Street.

3) I think a great trip would be to break it up into three different parts. Stay in Austin, then find a place in the Texas Hill Country, then stay in San Antonio (you can fly in to Austin and out of San Antonio). Seeing the TXHC is pretty much a driving tour. I would stay at Sage Hill Inn in Kyle Tx, just outside of Austin. From there, drive around always taking the back roads! The thing about the TXHC is that it's more about the trip than the destination.

San Marcos - Funky college town

Fredricksburg - More German food, shopping, cute tourist town

Luckenbach - Stop and have a beer on the way to Fredricksburg

4) Only a Texan can appreciate the Texas coast! It just doesn't compare to other state's beaches.

5) Lots of quaint small town shopping, but you don't necessarily have to buy anything except a t-shirt of course!

6) Again, you don't have to be in the desert to be hot in Texas! Border towns are too far away.

Lynn, not all wineries are created equal, and we(DD's and myself)love this cozy romantic little slice of heaven, which also has accommodations if you decide to spend the night. I believe there's only one suite in the main house so resv would need to be made asap. The *original* Salt Lick Bar b q(and better than the others!) is less than a mile away on the same road~probably one of the largest bar b q restaurants you will ever visit! They only accept cash but do have atm machines on the grounds. Most of the seating is outdoors, but it is covered. They serve their own wine but you can also bring your own and be charged a small corking fee. With your navigation system they can both be found very easily. Salt lick is a lame BBQ tourist trap. It used to be good. Much better BBQ all over the place.

Did I say it was the *best*? It's the most well know and visitors have heard of it thru tv shows, advertising, friends, etc. Our family actually prefers Rudy's, but the Salt Lick is perceived as an Austin bar d q 'experience'. Your *opinion* is appreciated Magdalena.
