Replacing rotted exterior wood trim on sliding door

We had so much rain this winter that I noticed fungus popping out from one of our sliding door's top trim. When I touched the trim, it was spongy. I ended up removing the top trim and intended to replace it with a preprimed exterior trim 3/4"x3.5". I cut the trim to length and painted (twice) on all 6 sides. Upon examining the old trim and space, I realized that the flashing sits maybe an inch into the wall (the old trim wasn't a flat piece, it appears that they had used a 2 x 4 and cut out the corner of it to "slide" it into the space.
I plan to keep the existing flashing and add another layer of the flashing "tape" over it. My question that I'm hoping to get some opinion is should I just screw on my flat trim over the space or would I need to get more wood to make the stucco flush with the door? If so, what is the best way to do that without getting a 2 x 4 and using a table saw or router (both of which I don't have). Can I glue to "extra" piece onto the back of the flat piece?
Thank you!
