Stored in the proper conditions, budwood can still be viable after 6 months. I think rooting a cutting such as these would be much more unlikely.

What a fantastic idea for getting buds to try some budding. I don't think i see stem and leaf attached citrus at this time of the year though. I recall seeing them at stores a few months ago. I bought some flying dragon seeds from ebay last week. They haven't come yet but I hope they will be viable seeds. I know fresh is best.

The twigs are quite small in diameter. Not the ideal size for budding, but I can always try.

I saw some in the Shoprite today too and was wondering what they were. I was tempted to root some too.

I did-it. 2 years ago. Now there are 3 little fruits on the clementine tree obtained by grafting grocery store twig on clementine seedling obtained from the same season seeds.

Does anybody know of other places that may sell fruit like this? Tempted to give it a shot but trader joes is quite far away.

I have seen them at Whole Foods and other (non-chain) stores.

Typically, when they sell Satsumas, they cut the fruit with a bit of the stem and leaves. You can't just pull the fruit from the tree without risking ripping the peel. So that's why they do this. And these were in a plastic container which probably held in more moisture, so the leaves were still quite fresh.

Found some like this last week. There were two different types in the same bin. One was small like the clementines often sold in wooden boxes and the other was medium to large like a typical mandarin. Both were seedless. I have no idea what the actual varieties are but they come from spain.

I have no rootstock to graft to so im trying to root the stems. The leaves were not all that fresh and fell off after a few days but some of the stems are starting to grow at the buds already in only a week so im hopeful some will root.

Found this old thread and am happy to report that the Leaf-and-Stem scion material has taken. I did several veneer grafts last February onto Citrumelo rootstock. Still not sure what the actual variety is, but I suspect it's Murcott, or possibly Tango.

It's amazing this material is permitted to ship internationally, while getting permission to ship scions internationally is very restricted, if possible at all.

herman zimmerman, this is domestic citrus, but yes, and I suppose I am taking a risk grafting material that may could potentially carry HLB, but we'll observe the plant. I don't believe we have any virus vectors up here in Virginia. If HLB becomes a serious issue in CA, they'll soon stop the 'leaves-and-stems' presentation, I'm sure.

Dave, my graft of TJ mandarin is huge and has five fruit. It would have had more, but I thinned them out. They are not ripe yet, but I can't wait to try them. Yeah, HLB should not be a problem up here but it had not occurred to me to worry about the graft. My tree looks very healthy so the twig I used must have been fine.

Dave and Steve, the Prague citsuma is doing great. It is a slow-growing tree, but it grew quite a bit this year in the ground. We have had lows in the mid-20s I think so far and it has not had any issues. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow. Alexander is doing very well. I moved him closer to the windows in my sunroom this year and I've kept it as cold as possible. He seems to like that. I noticed with the Meyers that the colder it is, the fewer leaves they drop. I understand the relationship between light needs and temperature, but the other trees are not as susceptible to leaf drop. The cold does them good. Dave, I gave away my big oroblanco. I'm glad you got the cutting when you did. I love the flowers, but I am just not a fan of grapefruit. I only kept one grapefruit because it is a more compact tree and easier to manage - a red ruby. The flower of that one also smells great. I just give the fruit to my mom ;)

Laura, that Oroblanco is vigorous and what a bloomer. I've got more buds developing even now. I do find it hard to grow the fruit to maturity though. Sometimes they fall off when they're not ripe yet. Maybe the plant has to get bigger. I tasted a Melogold from the store and it was incredible. I assume Oroblanco is somewhat similar.
