How widespread are the concept of _____winters?

In Tennessee, we get winter and spring growth interrupted by cold spells. But they are so common that they have, over at least a century, been given names.

An example, this coming Friday, another cold snap will arrive, and it will probably coincide with the dogwood trees' bloom and it's called "Dogwood Winter"

After it will come "Blackberry Winter".

Before Dogwood Winter, some years we get Redbud winter.

All these winters are based on native plants.

And, to be fair, winter is over when the Black Walnut trees declare it with the appearance of the leaves of 2017 reaching the size of mouse ears.
