Comments (10)the issue is winter heave ... unlike trees/conifers/shrubs ... perennials need to get into the ground.. so they can GRAB HOLD .... before ground freeze ... its really a matter of day temps versus night.. for odds of success ... do not transplant if 100 degree days and 75 degrees nights.. just too much stress... but if night temps are getting into the 50 or 60's .. then then can recover from whatever the day temps are ... its all about getting some roots to grow .. to hold on.. a good blanket of mulch really helps .... I NEVER FERTILIZE IN MY Z5 AFTER ABOUT 8/15 ... we do NOT want lush vegetative ... GREEN .. growth late in fall.. we want the plant to harden off properly .. so dont get some bright idea that you can HELP your transplants with a heavy dose of fertilizer ... ken...See MoreLate summer/early fall?
Comments (2)I have all the plants you mentioned, except the bw, and none have blooms yet. Everything has been on schedule for me so far, even with the amazing amount of rain. Comments (11)Hi Several bulb types that I've been having good luck with are Lily of the nile Agapanthus several sizes and colors. Society garlic , has nodding purplish flowers , several gesneriads (not african violets but have never tried them Amazon lily looks like daffodils and flowers more than once a year ,Blood lily pretty but short lived flowering but has attractive foliage Cannas of course gazillions to choose from heliconias. Peruvian daffodils tropical iris i particularly like the tall types . bloom off and on throughout summer . Caldwell lily I have trouble getting them to go dormant but bet not a problem in 9 ??lol Many many south african bulbs ,gladiolus watsonias sparaxis some require very hot dry summers Many types of terrestrial orchids Already mentioned Crinum,Amaryillis , rain lilys. daylily . good luck gary...See MoreIris S (SC, Zone 7b)
