'Heritage' may be the best Austin rose, ever
Comments (16)Gorgeous shots! I understand Austin thinks she's his best. My regret is the zero lasting power for a bouquet. Mine also gets rust/blackspot in the late fall (no spraying). And she took longer to establish than any other rose I've had. Abraham Darby settled right in but Heritage didn't show her power until year 5 or so. Since then it's been gorgeous displays....See MoreWANTED: Haves and Wants for North Austin Plant Swap May 19th

Comments (20)Vaporvac, as the growing season winds down the disease resistance decreases, especially on the older foliage, near the ground. My Quietness roses, which are just about black spot proof, can get late season black spot some years when the BS pressure is exceptionally intense those years. Late season BS is generally of little concern. At this time the roses are just about done and will soon not need their leaves. Every year is different regarding what particular disease/insect pressure is dominant. For the most part, black spot is a constant in temperate, humid climates. Vaporvac, expect BS every year. It's a given. I deal with it by regular spraying of the Bayer fungicide, in the blue bottle. Younger bushes seem to be more vulnerable to disease. Well managed roses are also more able to resist disease. When I started using pigeon manure gotten from my loft (a new hobby for me in my old age), my yearly July-August plague of spider mites disappeared. The roses have subsequently flourished like they never did before. I would highly recommend annual, well composted manure applications in early spring in the North. This is in addition to your other rose feeding products. No other soil amendment/fertilizer works like manure. Believe me, I've tried everything. I still use other fertilizer type things, but cut back where necessary because of the manure....See MoreDavid Austin Roses, Are You Still Interested?
Comments (177)I wish I could try Summer Song here. A lot of roses that are doing well in my yard are ones others said wouldn't, when I was initially going to get them. All the many Austins I have are doing well so far with the exception of A Shropshire Lad. He is actually looking great so green and healthy and growing huge...however no flowers yet lol. I had Carding Mill die as a tiny band but I don't think it was because it was an Austin. I've had a few small bands die that weren't Austins as well lol. I think its dumb that Austin would pull Summer Song based on 'someone's' US climate because the US has sooo many different growing conditions. I have lived and gardened in several different US States and I had to practically relearn how to grow a lot of stuff. Soil was different, temperatures were different, wind was different, humidity or lack thereof was different, elevation makes a huge difference in terms of sun exposure and leaf burn. The whole seasons are 'backwards' in places like south Florida and Arizona, parts of California, and other places, because people plant their vegetable gardens in the winter rather than the summer. I could go on all day lol. On another note, I just ordered William Shakespeare 2000. I hope it likes it here :) I heard it is not going to be sold in the US from the Austin website next year. I had to get it before it was gone lol. Supposed to be here Thursday so I'm excited!...See MoreMagdalenaLee
