T5 HO Lights Provide Full Term Growth?
Comments (20)Good LED's work well also. Those cheap UFO's are junk however. You need to do your research, as there is good and bad in the market for LED lights. Given the right ones, they can do very well, and the technology is in constant improvement. Many people with bad results are using cheaper/older systems. They have come a long way. I personally am having good luck using a combination of T5HO's and a 120W LED. I've used it for two years now with good results. Things have improved a lot even in the last two years. I plan on upgrading to a 200-300W LED unit for mature plants, and keeping the T5HO's for seedlings. Eliminating the T5HO's from my LED room will make up for the additional power of the larger unit....See MorePlumeria Growth Under Florescent Lighting
Comments (17)Dave, I am in virginia too. I live in vienna. Just got hooked on to plumeria 3 months ago and started with 2 new rooted cuttings. Both plants are in 8inch containers and dropped all leaves but do have few spikes at top. Instead of putting them to dormant, I would like them to grow so that I get a chance to enjoy the blooms if any next summer. Is it just the shoplights you used? 4 foot tubes 40watt? Can you post your picture if possible to have an idea. My basement temp is 60+, if I start with the setup you did will that work for me? I have read many threads on this to understand and learn on growing plumerias, this is very addictive. Thanks...See MoreT5HO indoor lighting producing flowers on plummies
Comments (17)Wow, you are definately getting the hang of it!! Looks like this summer will be full of blooms for you. I got a cutting of Celedine off ebay, this is my first attemt to root a plumeria cutting so we will see how it goes. I also bought a plumeria pudica off ebay which should come in the mail soon, and Ill probably look for one or two more plumerias before I decide I have enough for this next growing season at least. All of my plumerias are free of spider mites for now, my pretty princess in in dormancy, and my unnamed plumeria is growing like crazy. It saw the coldest temps, but only stayed in dormancy for about 2 weeks before it decided to start growing. My pretty princess plumeria is still in dormancy (they are both in the same room). I think Im going to call my unnnamed plumeria, plumeria "vigorus" because it just wont stop growing (it was 2 feet tall when I got it in march and not even a year later and it is about 6 feet tall from the soil to the top of the stalk. My bananas were also suppost to be dormant, but have abotu 3 leaves on them now. I saw your bananas on another post, they are HUGE!!!!! Good luck and hope you see some flowers soon (on both your plumerias and your bananas!)...See MoreNumber of Hours Plumerias under Lights?
Comments (14)Terri, Plumerias are decideous trees. They loose their leaves in the winter, which is normal. They aren't evergreen. So, when it gets cool, the leaves will naturally fall off. They aren't dead when this happens, they want to sleep through the winter. It helps them to sleep, they grow better the next year. You don't have to grow them under lights at all in the winter. Cut all the leaves off the plant. Yes, I know, it's hard, but cut them all off. Take them and stick them somewhere where they really won't get much sun. Don't water them at all, well, mabey a couple times the entire winter when they are inside. I have 2 plumeria trees now for 5 years, they will get big! I put them to sleep every winter, because I am in zone 8, and they would die being outside here. Every fall I put them to sleep for the winter, I didn't water them at all last winter, for the entire winter, and they woke up in the spring. They will know when to start growing, they sense it. Then I start watering them, slowly taking them outside in April, and then I feed them Foliage Pro half strength every time I water. If you read the posts in Plumeria Forum, most of the people there are not leaving the trees outside in winter. They all overwinter them, and it is soooo easy to just cut the leaves off, put them in a closet, (I can't do that anymore, mine are too big), or a corner of a room and leave them alone. That's it....See MoreLoveplants2 8b Virginia Beach, Virginia
