Why bricks and mortar stores are losing (my) business

A couple of weeks ago I was browsing in a local shoe store and saw a pair of sandals in a new style that I would like to try on. I have a long foot, and usually wear an 11, and sometimes a 10. I asked the salesperson what the largest size they came in, and he replied, eleven, but they only carried up to size ten in the store. This isn't the first time that I've received the same response in this store, so I was a little exasperated. The clerk tried to explain that they didn't order "extended" sizes in new styles. I told him that that was why I never purchased anything in his store. Then he asked me where was I going to find them? I almost laughed at him. There are tons of online stores that are happy to sell me what I want in my size. And honestly, I'd much rather order from Zappos with their free shipping and free returns than to order from a local store. Zappos usually gets my order to me within one to two days - sometimes even the next day if I order in the morning. I can try the shoes on at home, then return them for free if they don't work out. If I order from the store it usually takes much longer, I have to drive to the store, and then if I decide after I take them home that they don't work I have to make a special trip back. And the cost is exactly the same as the local store.
