Any liquid weed/feed or just 'Weed' for Floratam??

I have Floratam. Finding weed killer is difficult... or I am just incompetent on knowledge. Whenever I look at products, it says ' for St Augustine grassx... Then says ' not for Floratam'. Frustrating! I would prefer a hose end spraying technique at this time. I would love a 'Weed/feed', but will settle for just the weed part right now. Can anyone advise? Thank you.

Don't worry about the mediocre reviews for the Ortho product. Most folks don't bother to read the label and then misapply. I've used Weed B Gon products with great success. It's more about the ingredients than the brand and proper application.

Thank you! I just took one of the Ortho for St Aug back to Lowe's today! This one must be new or not carried. I will go back. Thx again...

I agree with Tiemco. Don't use any weed killer until you've mowed the new grass three times (and no fair lowering the mower blade and mowing every day). I would go a step further. When you do use something to kill the weeds, don't use weed and feed. Do the weeding and feeding in two steps. It's much more effective that way. First put down the fertilizer. That will get the grass (and weeds) growing vigorously. A week or so later, when the weeds are really growing well, go around and spot spray the weeds with a broadleaf weed killer. The weed killer will be much more effective when the weeds are growing vigorously. I know the weed and feed products are widely available and advertised, but that's marketing and convenience, not effectiveness.

I agree with mulching. I worry about extending my garden beds due to the wild violets. We managed to pull the bulk out of the front bed, but it took an entire summer. My in-laws were visiting and bored during the day so would go out and dig down to the roots. They are persistent buggers! I have followed up this year by putting a second layer of thick mulch and taking any foliage off in order to starve the roots. Beside the stray leaf and weeding a lot before the mulch was put down, I have barely needed to weed. Whatever does grow through is weakened by having to push through the mulch. My lawn is almost 100% weeds dispite reseeding every Spring and Fall. I am planning on reseeding the lawn soon for the fall and then placing the feed pellets as an organic preemergent in the Spring. Might help with the garden, too if the lawn stops being one huge weed.... :)

Good question. It should work. Many weed killers will have 3 herbicides on the label as active ingredients. Like the Weed B Gone, mentioned, etc.. It should not take repeat spray to at least see initial damage. In fact, if you spray at 75% label rate, you may get the old ones too - fully. A slow kill is a better kill many times. I've sprayed country clubs several times - hundreds of acres - and the results should be better than what you indicated. What's the weak link in the chain? Is there any possibility that you mixed it wrong? You're 100% sure that it's concentrated? Is there just 1 active ingredient on the label? Are the leaves at least shriveling? A good application should show slight twisting of foliage within a few hours; or at least the same day. It may take 2 to 3 weeks for the complete kill to occur.

Wait, wait, wait. Don't spray borax on your lawn unless you have a soil test that shows you are short on boron. Boron is an essential micronutrient, but there is a sensitive threshold on how much a plant can take. If you go over the limit, you would essentially sterilize your soil and nothing but a few select weeds will grow. The best soil test to determine your boron levels is the $25 test from Logan Labs.

Do you have a lot of weeds? 2,4D/MCPP/Dicamba will take out most but not all weeds. When I blanket sprayed my yard for weeds I used the Weed B Gon and got rid of most of the weeds. But, I still had some weeds left and Weed B Gon CCO did the trick. It's main ingredient is Triclopyr and the stubborn weeds that the 2,4D didn't work on, it did.

Not sure if it's safe for Floratam but worth a call to Ortho.

I think Triclopyr will injure/kill St.A. I know it will injure Bermuda.

I called Otho because I could not find the Weed B Von St Augustine/Florstam. I found out the State of Florida does not allow the chemical in the State because of water contamination/documented health dangers... Looks like I use the granules...:(

Doesn't that have 2,4-D? A lot of websites (UF, TAMU) say not to use that, or say to use with caution, on SA. Then again, pretty much everything needs caution on SA...

It does have 2,4-D, apparently. The page says :

I don't know why they make a St.Augustine herbicide with 2,4-D in it. Maybe it's so little it doesn't hurt it? But if you over-apply it's a problem.

Here's another one I've seen at Lowe's, HD, and Walmart. Generally it seems that if the label has purple color on it, it is probably good for Floratam. Read the label to be sure. Then read the full label 2 more times to be sure you understand how to apply and how often. This is supposed to be applied by walking backwards so you don't walk through the spray or the wet area. Atrazine is bad stuff. Remember this works as foliar wetting not by soil drench.

I need to get a more focused picture of that stuff.
