WANTED: 10 Big Zac tomato seeds (store bought only F1)
Comments (2)Hi Denise, I just looked through a box of tiny packets of seeds I got this spring. Must be hundreds of different varieties, most of which I've never heard of. And I thought I knew tomatoes? Anyway there's one packet of 6 seeds of Big Zac. They're yours if you'll grow 'em and save seeds to pass along next year! And lots more varieties available. PS...I've got Tom covered for the GC. Do you need any more? Treefrog...See MoreDifficulties with growing tomatos from seeds
Comments (7)Here's a great link from the tomatoes forum: http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/tomato/2005015135020413.html Tomato seeds don't need light to germinate. I usually stick mine on top of the fridge or slide them under my bed to germinate, covered with a plastic lid or plastic wrap. You might even want to leave a small crack for some air to circulate. It's important to use a seed starting mix, not potting soil. This mix is sold in small bags in the garden section of your local big box store. Wet the mix, but not too much. You should be able to pick up a handful and squeeze it and just get a couple drops of water to drip out. I could go on, but everything is in the link posted above, plus with pics. It's definitely better to start them inside. Here in Texas, we have to take advantage of the small window of time when the plants can set fruit. To heat the soil, so they start growing quicker in early Spring, try using black plastic about 2mm thick. I take the plastic off in May and add a good layer of natural mulch. If anyone reading this post lives in the Plano area, I have extra seedlings to give away. I posted a message on the Texas exchange page. Pete...See MoreSeeds germinating inside store bought tomatoes!
Comments (2)I had some corn cobs germinating in my compost pile, not the first time, but this time I planted them. They are not that big but do have tassles now. I wanted to see just what develops from them. All this time I thought seeds need a freeze cycle before they would germinate. Not these, lol....See MoreGrowing plants from seeds still in the tomato
Comments (11)How OLD does a tomato need to be for this to happen??? ***** Tom, age is not the only factor. Most folks find germinated seeds in fruits that have been shipped long distinces and stored under cool conditions and sold in stores. But for sure they can appear in home grown tomatoes as well, as Mark has just pictured. Soft fleshed varieties such as the gold/red bicolors are often mentioned as being particularly susceptible to interior seed germination. Carolyn...See Morevivisgarden (7b)
