Proper way to plant camellias

I have read conflicting articles on the proper planting of a camellia. All day to plant them 1-2 inches above soil level, but some say to cover the top of the exposed root ball with soil while others say do not cover. What is the correct way to plant them? I currently have my newly planted camellias uncovered but can easily cover the tops with some soil. We are having the yard mulched tomorrow and I want to make sure they are planted properly first. My landscape guy who is a horticulturist, has his phd in botany etc says to cover them and to also tamp down the plant so it gets rid of air pockets and isn't as spongy. I did that this morning but now I'm scared maybe that was wrong too with our heavy clay based soil in Houston. I read so many conflicting things I just don't know.
