I caved... ordered from Northland Rosarium...

I know, I know I've said several times... NO MORE ORDERS!!... Well, I couldn't help myself. I ordered AUTUMN SUNSET for another climber at the veggie garden fence area; WHIZ BANG because it's an interesting looking new stripey climber (which will go at the veggie pen fence also); KISS ME, a lovely looking orange-pink new GR from Ping Lim: Kordes' SOUL SISTER to add to the apricot/yellow DA-type bed; and to make it worth the shipping... I added the mini CUTIE PIE because it looks so beautiful!

Anybody have any experience with any of these??

Beth, you're helpless! lol You and Romegen make me laugh! If you ordered these roses, you should also order Port Sunlight and Thomas A Becket from Hortico, you know you wanted those so bad. 2 more roses won't hurt...... :-)

No, that wasn't me wanting THOMAS A BECKET. Yes on PORT SUNLIGHT tho. I know... I almost ordered a bunch from Hortico again. But I still haven't received the first two orders yet!! I just gotta stop it!! Slap my hand!

Since they are bands, I presume they are own root? If they are grafted, that might be the problem, although they sound awfully young for root stock to be emerging already. If they are own root, maybe you got 2 roses in one pot (believe it or not, this has happened frequently). I would just plant them in a 1 gallon pot, and leave them there for 6 to 12 months, and see what they do. Some of my favorite roses we obtained either because an old root stock emerged (de la Grifferie, and also a marvelous pink rambler we think is Dawson's Apple Blossom), or because of a mistake by the nursery (I was sent Summertime when I had ordered Altissimo - Summertime's color goes MUCH better with the other roses in that bed, and has the same growth habit as Altissimo). So, I find it fun to wait and see what happens, although of course it is understandable that you want the rose(s) you actually ordered. Jackie

Yeah, I don't remember them being packed so hap-hazardly in the past. They were packed with some going up and some going down, with wads of newspaper stuffed in between, but not a whole lot of newspaper. They were not secured to the box. I can't remember if they do that or not. I know RU tapes and staples and really secures the plants in place. It's almost a nightmare to get them unpacked! LOL But... I'm not worried about the plants. They are fine. Whichever plant it came off of will recover.

I'm wary of hijacking this thread, but since you ask, Sheila... I received a 'Peace', 'Life of the Party', 'Twilight Zone', and 'Stanwell Perpetual'. I wondered whether the 'Peace' (which I keep potted, and overwinter in an unheated garage) might be the result of decreased vigor after decades of propagating -- certainly one hears of such things with that rose. And the two floribundas are possibly just getting off to a slow start here in Zone 5b. But for a rose as reputedly tough as 'Stanwell Perpetual' to be a shrinking violet... well, it was disappointing.

Oursteelers, how I wish I'd seen this thread sooner! I would love to have met you there! So happy you found some goodies. There are always lots more than what's posted in the online catalog. So much from the catalog is sold out this time of year, but Carol continues to get roses in all summer and so worth while to see the display gardens - though they are probably between flushes, and all the perennials, annuals, veggies and herbs, shrubs, ornamental trees, ironwork, pottery, and meet the staff. Carol is an incredibly knowledgable rosarian and one of the kindest people I know. She makes everyone feel like family. You got home with some great roses! I hope your family was able to get out and stretch their legs and the little ones could run around and expend some energy. I'm going out there this week. Tomorrow, we're taking our family to the airport (boo hoo), then seeing the vet, so Northland has to wait until Wednesday. Pippa, your Sydonie is so beautiful and is great confirmation to oursteelers that she made a wonderful choice.

Beth I had Kiss Me and have been searching for it for like 4 years. I just love this rose and had originally planted it for my dog Rosie so was pretty happy to find it again at Northland. It blooms constantly and has a nice fragrance and nice shape to the shrub. My husband even commented that "that rose has been blooming all summer" which is like a sterling endorsement lol. I have Autumn Sunset but it was a band last year so too early to say but there are some nice reviews of it here. I have Soul Sister coming from Chamblees, couldn't pass it up!
