HFGH in Canada
Comments (8)abruzzese There wasn't any duty on the greenhouse. We did pay point of sale taxes in the U.S. and GST and PST. I think it depends on your province whether you pay the provincial tax. My DH followed the advice on this forum on reinforcing the greenhouse plus a little extra. So far this winter we've had multiple snow falls and what is called here on the west coast hurricane force winds. In December we had a snowfall with accumulations of 18" in one day followed by rain. The rain makes that snow very heavy. Within a 24 hour time the snow was gone the crawl space under our house was flooded the greenhouse dry. So far the green house has survived winds, snow loads, and flooding situations. Will it survive the years we have what they call storms of the century probably not. We are pleased with what we have and I do like playing in the dirt year round when in Canada our seasons do tend to be short....See MoreShotening HFGH
Comments (16)I have to chime in with everyone here and agree that you would probably be sorry if you tried to shorten the height of your GH. There are just too many other ways to increase the insulation of the GH and altering the original structure would be complicated and messy. You would be missing out on a lot of shelf space, opportunities to hang plants and the cooling effect of having that space for the heat to rise. And we've all agreed that cooling the GH is just as difficult as heating it, even here in the more northern locations. I'm in Ontario also, halfway between London and Sarnia. Yesterday, outside temps were in the mid 20's but with the sun out it was 105* in the GH until I went out and opened a door a few times. That is *with* an automatic window vent that is located in the ridge line of the roof. Imagine what the temps would be if I didn't have that extra 5 ft of overhead space for the heat to rise to! My GH isn't a HF but is homebuilt and quite tall. I'm thankful for the extra space that allows me to have upper shelves (or very tall ones on the lower bench), hanging baskets and good air movement. The walls and north roof are insulated and in winter I use a clear solar pool cover over the whole building, with a hole cut to accomodate the roof vent. I ordered it in the States and drove over to pick it up from an American friends address....See MoreSome Greenhouse Photos
Comments (78)Hi Wyndyacre, So sorry to hear about your mother. I'm glad you transplanted some of her garden into yours. You'll always treasure those plants. I did the same thing when my mom passed. I still have those Hostas after 35 yrs and moving so many times during those years. I always dug them up and took them with me and I think of her every time I look at them, especially when they bloom. I'm another member who hasn't been here in a long time. I was so glad to see your greenhouse again, it's always been an inspiration to me. It IS hard to believe it's been eight years since you had those sales. I remember wishing I lived near you at that time! I have your greenhouse pinned on my Pinterest board. It looks more like a little get-away or studio now since you repaired and updated it. I like the changes and additions you've made. I'm glad to hear you can relax and enjoy your garden more now but I bet those people miss your plant sales!!...See MoreGreenhouse set up
Comments (62)Hmmm.........does she live there? Well, she's there a lot. She's about 6 foot long, a baby..lol. The only problem with her was a while ago .....she drug a dead pig (wild bore) up there ......and ........well, the smell went away after a while LOL. The United States Gov. owns the river swamp (thank God), it's working alive with Game Wardens and they don't play. They haul you straight to jail for "harassing" those animals. That's why I don't even be back in there moving dead pigs around...LOL.............. Would she eat pets? You BETYA!!! In a New York minute! We have very strong fences here with very small mesh (keeps them out, my little dogs in) and I am double fenced from the swamp. I've had very tiny turtles hatch back there, get confused and crawl into my Koi pond on my patio. I have a net to dip them out and haul them down to the river. You look a little panicked there MH...LOL. I was born here, lived right here most of my life and it's part of life really. You learn about the danger, what to do, not to do, how , why, when and where. You grow a healthy RESPECT for - Mother Nature. I'm glad she's there, her and all of her swamp mates . ......I don't know, the swamp is a wonderful, beautiful, magical place. Being here, there ........maybe all is not well with the world, but at least for this river swamp things are still ...OK........ Have you figured out??? Pat got a new camera.......lol.........to many buttons........I'm confused.........refuse to read instructions........See MoreRelated Professionals
