Name That Plant!

Looking for help identifying a flower native to midwest/central US

I found this photo when I was checking out Deep Middle blog and clicked over to a shop for garden plans for native plants (linked at end of post). It kind of looks like sweetpea but that's native to Italy, so I wouldn't expect it to be included in a native garden package.

Any ideas?

If you are talking about the blue flower in bottom center picture that is Baptisia.

Oh no, I tried to attach a photo when I posted this from my mobile :(

I do mean the blue one in the bottom-center photo. Thanks for the help!

Just joined GW and have been reading many of the "Hot and Dry" maple threads. As a former Northeaster looking for Fall Colors I've decided to try numerous trees down here to see what works best. I'm in San Antonio in the "toes" of the Hill Country on the NW side. 8-10 of "soil" and then rock/caliche. Testing either in ground or in pots (need pots as I can't get everything in the ground) Shantung, both "normal" and "Fire Dragon" - planted Caddo "John Pair" - dirt bag Big Tooth sourced from Love Creek (in ground) and Big Tooth from online (dirt pot) Mexican Sugar Maple (2) - dirt pots Chalk Maple (2) - dirt pots Also testing a Paperbark and Trident Maple. Want to also get a Flashfire Caddo and Highland Park Big Tooth but sourcing is $$ and my wife might kill me. Maybe in the early spring... We'll see how it all goes and will post up next spring. Al, These plants were uprooted and subsequently planted, as I mentioned in the original post. I had to put them in soil as soon as possible and I doubt anyone, even an experienced gardener like yourself, could have avoided the stress of transplant unless they dug out a block of dirt when moving them. These were growing in a gravel driveway and were going to be sprayed with herbicide. I saw the opportunity to save a few. That is all. I find your comment very condescending.

Why different Daucus carota might look different? Growing conditions. Variations due to genetics. The cultivated carrot is a subspecies of Daucus carota and look at all the variation in that. I see a lot of variation in the Daucus carota growing where I live. Some with petite flowers and others have huge umbrellas. Some with only 1-3 flowers and others with a dozen. You did grow Daucus carota, right? Please share a link to a photo of your plant! We can maybe confirm that for you. FataMorgana

Monarda media (Purple Bergamot.) It is a native in the US.

Embothrium is right-- the sweet-pea-like plant is a Baptisia. I would hazard Baptisia australis- blue false indigo, since that's the most common blue one throughout most of it's range, and used extensively in the horticulture trade. Both sweetpea and the false indigos are in Faboideae, so they are distant relatives.

Thanks all for the help! I'm starting to convert my garden to native plants and this one satisfies my need for something snapdragon-y that is from the midwestern US. Now I know what to ask for instead of showing an unlabeled photo :)

Baptisias are available not only in blue-purple, but also deep reddish, yellow and white/cream. They also vary quite a bit in size, with my largest being about 5' tall and wide.
