Repair, Don't Replace, Old Wood Windows
Comments (154)Mary, Are you referring to window restoration or just sealing up some existing windows? The two are going to be very different type professionals. If it it just sealing up some exterior trim on windows, a decent painter can do that. If its window restoration, that is a different ball of wax. Window restoration is a very niché marketplace. The best thing to do is start with a Google area search near your home and especially in those areas that are more heavily concentrated in older homes. Next would be to ask around any of the historic districts that are in your area and see who they might have a list for. Hope this helps....See Morewindows: replace, repair, do nothing
Comments (12)good point by cat_ky, although I would do all or nothing for aesthetics and matching. The most recent Cost vs Value Report by Remodeling Magazine, puts the ROI (in the increased home value) on replacing windows above 70%. There are a lot of variables in that, so you'd want to think about the type of credit that a buyer might ask for, vs what you would actually spend on replacement. The lower number of course would be your best bet. If you are planning to put the home up sooner than later, perhaps you could talk to a Realtor now and get some indication of what a fair credit amount may be, and have a quote or two on the window replacement for comparison. Beyond that, I'd agree with the above comments regarding the condensation issue as well. Depending on circumstances, additional action above and beyond turning the humidifier down or off may be needed....See MoreWindow Replacement vs. Repair
Comments (6)Sierra Pacific acquired the assets of Semco. It was stated that they would not continue to manufacturer that window, but that could have changed and/or they may have the parts needed. I'd agree with the other pro's, if the only issue that you have is weather-stripping, its hard to justify replacement. The age of your windows is definitely an outlier for that line, we see them often replaced sooner, rarely much later than 20 years. Perhaps you've been diligent with maintenance and/or fortunate to have surrounding conditions that are friendly to the life of the window....See Morerepair or replace windows
Comments (3)+1. If they are in decent shape otherwise and you plan to move soon, replacing only the glass in those affected units is probably your best bet....See MoreMason Truelove
