My new basement greenhouse pictures

I live on the ocean in the Pacific Northwest where the wind howls, rain drenches and lack of sunshine year round prevents growing plumeria outdoors. A couple months ago I introduced my plumeria to their new living area in my basement. Love it even though in the process I lost several big plants from mites, fungi and bacteria due to humidity being much too high. Since have installed a dehumidifier which keeps humidity around 35% and things seem to be thriving. Replaced the lost plants with some new MPG cuttings and some seeds. Have Hawaii posters lining the walls, music plays when I enter, water from two rain barrels piped in, couple of fans, and my Tommy Bahama chair. No suntan lotion.

As K has said this is all a learning process and losing some plants is part of it. Love my Hawaii in the basement. Even have my dive and snorkel equipment in an empty room adjacent.

That's so awesome! I wish I'd discovered plumerias when I lived in Montana because I would have done the same thing!

I am so impressed with what you have done but also know how much work it must be to maintain that set up. I love Hawaii - we have been 4 times in the past 4 years - we basically just discovered it. The plumeria are so awesome there - but it is their natural environment.

I also am trying to grow them here in Eastern NC - but my conditions are a little better than where you are. We cannot plant them in the ground because we do have snow in the winter - and low temps - but not always. Still - impossible to predict from year to year. I keep them in the garage and have a small space heater when it gets below 36 degrees.

Mine are only 2 years old - and they dropped their leaves over the winter when they were dormant. They are outside in the yard now and showing signs of growing.

I really do admire your efforts and hope you see flowers soon!

Ambitious indeed. You will have an interesting jungle when the squash start growing :-) I have grown under lights before, but never had much success until this year. I'm in North Carolina. We usually get a big snow every 5 years. It's time for one this year. Here, we get 4 full seasons. This year I have too many trees to store in the garage. So I need a way to easily protect them. I have a big shed out back but if tempertures drop down to the teens, I know many of my trees will die if I store them in there. So I have a baseboard heater and a fan that I will control with a thermostat in the greenhouse. I think it will work fine. I just don't want them to freeze. Every year I get an Alma fig tree. Even though I protect it; she dies to the ground and never comes back. This year my sweetest fig is Stella. I got one fig from a 3 yr tree and after a very slow growing year; she's producing fruit. So, I got to protect her this year. Thanks for asking guys.

Cindy that is wunderbar! Very pretty and I'm sure it will look even lovelier with your magnificent collection out there. :) I bet you're hopping up and down with excitement. Thanks for sharing progress pictures as well as the finished product! @ Denise Radiant heat is indeed a great choice for such structures. My parents are using it to heat a corn crib they've remodeled for more non-conventional living purposes. I believe Cindy said this was intended as a seasonal growing area, though, so maybe she won't have to worry about that? Thanks for flipping the picture for us!

YOur pickering is beautiful and loaded with tons of flower spikes. I hope you get fruits this year! Also, your jakfruit looks healthy and has nice growth, too! I wished I could say the jakfruit you sent was 4' but it's only half that size. Though, I still find it to be a very handsome seedling! And it's finally starting to spit out a new leaf lol I still can't get over how very tasty your violet de bordeaux looks! AS a matter of fact, I look forward to trying one of these spectacular treats, though, that might be a few years. But maybe I might get lucky and find them at whole foods?
