Thanks for all the suggestions. The width of the area I'm working with makes things very challenging, doesn't it? val -- the advantage to your idea of roller shades is not having to worry about any cords hanging down. I did look at something called a solar shade at one time, but I think I may want a softer look. les -- one of my first thoughts was to use some type of pleated or honeycomb shade (because they are available without cords) along with a valance to hide them, just as you suggested, but somewhere along my thought process, I thought it would be nice to have some kind of single-panel panels to soften that side of the room. I probably should let that idea go because it may not be the best solution for the area, especially considering the limited amount of clearance I have to the right. We have Silhouettes in the LR, which I love, so if I have the Luminettes in the FR, that may flow nicely thru the house. One of my concerns about the Luminettes, tho, is when they're open, I wonder how much space I would have to allow for them to stack. deborah -- maybe you can answer my question about how tightly the Luminettes stack when open. sally -- do you also have the Luminettes? parma -- thanks for the pictures. We don't get The Sun Times, we get The Tribune. I looked at the paper's website, but couldn't find the article. I'll try the Divine Design website. The thing is I don't really want a lot at the windows and after having nothing there for such a long time, anything will seem like a lot to me, I think. I still want to have them very open during the day, especially on a day like today with all the snow we're getting. We have some very large pine trees in our yard that look so pretty in the snow. I hope to head out to a local drapery store on Monday to at least get some suggestions there.

My kitchen cabs are maple and my granite/floor are gray. We painted our LR in BM London Fog and I like it alot. Our accent colors are gold/tan, but you could pick a green that goes well with whatever gray you pick and do accent walls or other surrounding rooms. In my case (center hall colonial) we did the foyer/stairs/upstairs hall in a light gold/tan. The kitchen is a darker version of the gold/tan. The LR is light gray (London Fog) the DR off LR is 2 chips darker as is the FR--Plymouth Rock. The powder room is on same chip but darker--Waynesboro Taupe. I kept all the ceilings white as well as trim. I felt daring doing accent walls/different colors on same floor, etc...but it coordinates and came out great...I love it. Maybe start with the green in your chairs and then go around the fan deck and find a coordinating gray.

Seeing your light colors and the soft glow, what about a filtering honeycomb shade? Maybe in a milky cream color. They diffuse the light, but don't block it (you can get blocking ones, but not needed for a bathroom). They give privacy (I've had them in bathrooms and always test from the outside!) You can keep them lowered and still get light, or raise them when not in use and they compress to almost nothing. Something similar to this: I just ordered/installed window treatments for most of my house. I was sort of set on shutters for a long time, until I managed to find a demo shutter and bring it home, and saw how much of the window view was blocked by the shutter frame. That was a deal breaker for me. I ended up going with 2.5" slat blinds and am happy I did. Just a note on the shutters. On a window that thin I think you'll lose a lot of light. If there's anything on the outside of that window that can see you, you'll want to make sure you get lined bamboo shades, if you go that route.

Hi aliris, I've got nothing to show but I did want to tell you that when the guy was coming for pictures I panicked about not having window treatments yet. I thought it would be my excuse for getting it done. He told me not to worry. I ripped down my $5 Target temp shades in the eating area and just went with naked windows. I also looked on Houzz and in some magazines and noticed naked windows are making a come back! Who knew that my lack of window treatments would look so ...so...so in style? I think I am going to put a rod across the top of all the windows and have curtain panels that I can close, but not do any shades/matchstick romans at all. I really like this look, at least during the day. Not loving the blackness at night. Of course this is not helping you, but I thought I'd share what my plans are for down here. Upstairs, I still want to do something to block the light and add curtains too. I'll get there, but until the $5 Target shades are working like a champ--they do go up and down, not just the clips.
