Poll: What is the 1 thing in your home you can't live without
Comments (11)Truly, the one thing in my home I can't live without...the people who live in it with me!!;-) I know that was sappy, but I couldn't resist. Now honestly, I LOVE my laundry room. Two big windows looking out to the woods, my sound system, cable hookup, integrated ironing board, tons of folding space....can you tell where I spend a great deal of my time? Oh, the other place I spend my time is the kitchen, but right now the laundry room is my favorite. Hopefully as the children grow up that will no longer be my favorite. Comments (13)I agree with those who refuse to pour a ton of extra money into carpeting. We did, 14 years ago, and while I did get a LOT of compliments on the Sculpted Berber that we chose, it's a $%&$@ to vacuum because all the dog hair, lint, crumbs, etc., wants to 'hide' in the sculpt and I've wished for the last 10 years now that the carpet would just evaporate right off the floor and be gone. Heck no, this stuff is going to outlive US, I swear, as 14 years later, it still looks almost brand new even though it's a very light 'stone' color. Luckily we're moving away from IT instead, building another home, and while I have nothing against Berber in general, we did opt for Frieze this time as a change of pace. Actually, we're doing a combination of Porcelain tile in the Foyer, Kitchen & Baths, Laminate in the Dining Room, Office and Workout Room, and then Frieze in the remaining Bedrooms, Family Room and Living Room. It's a heck of a lot softer than Berber, but I kinda/sorta agree with whoever it was that said that it reminded her hubby of the outdated Shag. I'm hoping that I'll like this!...See MoreIf paint finish is your most important criteria
Comments (12)I wanted to report back guys. I am on a quest for the perfect warm white paint finish and this might be helpful for others who search the board. Today I met with a really nice KD who reps Crystal. She also had a Shiloh display in the showroom. I was surprisingly impressed with Shiloh- it was a heavily glazed and distressed paint finish so I couldn't really judge color, but the construction and overall finish felt really solid. I studied it and looked for things like seam lines and I was impressed with the paint application. I liked the Crystal too- it was an inset, simple shaker display in a matte white. Crystal seems to have a larger number of whites from which to choose though the Shiloh Soft White seemed nice... and Shiloh has some nice colors. I am considering doing a hutch type piece in a contrasting color. Both, though, felt very "modern" to me. Living in a nearly 100 year old house full of English farmhouse type antiques, I think I am just having trouble getting used to modern paint finishes. I know they are more durable but I think I am just going to have to wrap my head around the idea. I would prefer inset-I love the look- but I worry (or rather my DH worries) that it will be more challenging to install in our 'nothing is even, nothing is level' house and the KD did mention that it might be more prone to environmental expansion issues in an old house with more temperature swings than in modern houses. Decisions, decisions......See MoreNeed Opinions! What's the most important.....
Comments (32)I love it here in Lancaster county PA! I have 1 acre and taxes are just over 3,000 a year. We get virtually no natural disasters. We are 2 hours away from Chesapeake Bay, 3 to beach, 1.5 to Philly, 3 to NYC and 2 to the mountains. We have great healthcare all around and many very nice retirement communites. Our economy here is currently very stable compared to some other areas. The scenery, architecture, history, and cultural events will keep you active for years. You will find it very conservative, church going crowd for the most part. We do get full enjoyment of 4 seasons. I have 2 family owned groceries within 10 minutes and Walmart,Target and CVS are within reason (no Publix at all, sorry) - but lots and lots of roadside produce! Even plenty of places that raise beef, pork and poultry you can have custom cut. Still can find lots of garages and small repair shops that will work on a hand shake and let you pay next week. I love it here, wouldn't move if I could....See MoreGerety Building and Restoration
