A suspended fixture (chandelier) is a good and frequently used fixture in dining areas. With the size of room and ceiling height you describe, however, it's unlikely that the fixture, by itself, will be able to give enough light, comfortable and flattering light for the entire room.

Will you have other furnishings or built-ins in the room? Will you have artwork or displays on some walls? These are the sorts of things for which additional, specially selected fixtures are common, in addition to the suspended fixture.

The lowest bit of your chandelier should be about 3' above the dining room table.

Thank you both for such helpful information! The dining room area will be approximately 11' by 17', so according to the formula above, a 28" chandelier would be appropriate. I could probably get away with the 32" fixture I have selected - see below.

Geez, I didn't realize that the photo would be so large! Not sure how to resize.

The living room portion of the space will have lighting as well. I plan to have two sconces on the opposite end from dining room, two table lamps, as well as a floor lamp, along with several recessed lighting fixtures. Hopefully, that lighting will suffice. There will be artwork along one wall, so perhaps lighting to illuminate the artwork would be a good idea.

32" seems to be borderline too wide as you need to keep it in proportion to the table and not only to the room (your table does not seem to be specially large) but I think it can work.

Usually the distance between table and lamp is 30" to 36" but your ceiling is very high so you could afford to go a few inches higher (depending on shape). If you like the chandelier and it feels too big compared to the table, just go a few inches higher and it should be ok.

In these pics they went roughly 60" between dining table top and lamp bottom but in your case, it could be about 42"

Just a thought...most interiors and special use areas don't do well with only a single lighting source. Your suspended fixture will certainly be attractive if it is installed sufficiently high above your table (it is rather large), but don't depend on it alone to light your entire dining space. :-)

Virgil, we will have additional lighting - several can lights will be installed in the area.
