Tell me about the China 'Purpurea' aka 'Winecup'
Comments (9)To me, the 'Indica Purpurea' in the SJHRG looks very similar to my 'Purpurea' from Vintage, but I have not made a side-by-side comparison of the two. According to the dates given on HMF, the varieties are distinct. but they sure do look a lot like each other. I have two plants of 'Purpurea'. One has been in the ground about 3 years in a challenging droughty/hot spot. It's about 5' tall and 4' wide. Its flushes are several dozen flowers total, but the flowers, so far, are usually not all open at once. They sort of string out, nine or a half dozen or so open at a time. The other was just planted this summer. It is actually a cutting from a piece accidentally broken off the first plant late last summer and simply stuck in a pot of soil -- it roots easily. It's planted in a better spot and blooms more often, though only about 1.5' tall (as did the other plant while it was in a pot, actually). I have yet to detect a scent (but I can't smell all scents). My overall impression is that with ample water and good soil, 'Purpurea' blooms more regularly. When conditions are not optimum, it seems to 'hunker down', maintaining flawless foliage and good looks but not blooming as much (which is what the older plant is doing right now -- with very little late winter or spring rains here, it's been difficult keeping its area adequately watered). It does seem a tough variety, as most found roses are....See Morefour chairs: can anyone tell me more about them?
Comments (22)Thank you for your thoughts on the chairs so far. Here is an update: First off, I should confirm that I am from the UK... so I'm guessing that these chairs are too. Secondly, my best guess is that they come from a place in England called "High Wycombe" and were made by William Bartlett and his company. Why do I think this? On closer examination I noticed that every chair has similar marking on its underside, including the image of an archer and the name 'strongbow' (see image below). All four chairs also have the phrase "REGD" stamped on them (the 'D'is superscripted) and two chairs also have numbers stamped on them (519950) and stamped initials 'WJE'. Googling Strongbow and furniture I came across the name William Bartlett. Indeed a search to one site revealed a logo which seemed to be of a very similar shape and stance to the stamp on the chair Web link 1. Also, a search on google maps suggest that the old premises of the company on Grafton Street in High Wycombe also displayed a similar logo Web link 2. A little more searching turned up a document from the High Wycombe council website which suggested that the 'Strongbow range dates at least to 1965 Web link 3. Now, if this is the case then I assume the chairs are reproductions in an arts a craft style and are not original pieces. Anyway. What do you all think? Does this sound plausible to you? Thanks in advance for your thoughts, time and effort....See MoreCan anyone tell me anything about this dinnerware?
Comments (6)My pleasure, glad to be of help. I normally visit this website to learn. Didn't realized that I could be of help this time. By the way, I forgot to mention that this tea set is usually Made in China and is made of porcelain. You may find this same design with various shapes of the cup, tray (dish) and teapot. However, the set you have is the most popular. Even if it doesn't worth ($$) very much, it's worth keeping it if you drink tea. It is considered as a traditional tea set and in some way, it is also a collectible set. In China, different type of tea is recommended to use with different type of teapotware. ie: Oolong tea is recommended to use with Yixing teapots, a purple clay found only in Yixing, China. Green tea is recommended to use with porcelain or ceramic teaware. Since it's porcelain, hand wash this set only. If you don't know much about porcelain, it is lighter than ceramic. It retains heat longer. It is strong but easily chip. Enjoy it!...See MoreAnyone know much about antique glassware? (many pics)
Comments (21)I have 37 pieces of the same stemware. Appraised as *heavy 24k gold inlay. Surprisingly sold as depression ware during the 1930's when pure gold was about $12. per ounce. Definitely a period piece(s). As to valuation...your guess as good as mine. *As opposed to the later thin period gold plating....See Morejemdandy
