Rose Standards

I have never owned a rose standard (tree), but always admired them. We just bought two large blue pots (from Vietnam I believe) at Costco. One of them would be perfect for a rose standard. Maybe both if I can get away with it...lol

In my zone 5b area I will need to bring those pots and a standard rose into the garage anyways, so a rose standard would be perfect for it.

Question is, which rose and where to get it. I like a full, round display, so hybrid teas would almost certainly not work here. It should repeat well enough so that it doesn't take too long between flushes. I also want a rose that is healthy against BS in my area and has a stronger fragrance. I mean this standard will be on my deck, at nose height and practically begging to be sniffed daily! :-) I have seen tree roses offered by DA and Edmund's. Any advise as to source and variety would be fantastic. Thanks a bunch!!

David Austin sales some nice quality Standards. They aren't cheap, but that is where I purchased mine. It was a Mary Rose.

It is now in the ground. They tend to outgrow pots quickly.

If your climate is like mine, the *roses* can go in the garage, but the *pots* should go somewhere frost-free, like the basement. The roses are actually planted in black nursery pots. Also, what kind of drainage holes do the ornamental pots have? Many don't, so handling water becomes an issue.

As of todays date the only tree rose that is hardy to zone five is Polar Joy. All others will need to be brought into garage or cellar over the winter. There are folks that do overwinter tree roses in garages.

Ask Regan. For the rose history buffs, who might be out there, at the turn of the 19/20th century, most roses were sold grafted or rose gardens were started by planting rootstock one year and the next year roses were budded onto that rootstock. There was quite a bit of interest in where to do the budding and some roses were recommended for standard budding (2-3 feet above the ground) and others were recommended to be dwarfs, much closer to the ground. So in those cases, dwarfed roses does not have a logical meaning.

After the first hard freeze. Won't hurt to wrap it as long as the wrap is removed early enough in late winter/early spring. Water when the soil appears to be dry or toss a shovel full of snow on the soil ocassionally. If the soil freezes, that's OK. Keep away from any outside light source. Place in a wagon or on rollers so it can be easily moved in and out when it warms up in late winter or spring. In spring, move out on days above freezing and in at night unless no frost is expected.

If the canes of the standards are very dormant, you can do what I used to do to get them started: Get a large clear plastic bag, take a couple handfuls of very damp spaghnum peat moss and pack it over the bud union. Take the bag and place over the canes and secure with a couple twist ties, under the bud union, make some air holes in the bag (you can clip off the corners of the bag). Keep them in some filtered sun, and watch them, in a few days the canes will start to bud and new basal breaks often emerge from the bud union. Gradually give the bag more air spaces as you are ready to remove the bag and moss.

Thanks folks for all your comments. A few points..

First, this thread took forever to show up for me... not sure why...

Next, I forgot to mention that my garage is attached to my house and stays above freezing all winter. I even use the garage to successfully overwinter my fuchsia collection. Which means I should easily be able to overwinter a not-frostproof pot with a rose standard as well.

I looked at Austin's standards. I like his roses, at least the healthier ones for me. Thank you for the pic, kingcobbtx, that standard looks wonderful. How tall is the stem part of it, do you remember? How fast does Mary Rose repeat for you?

Good point about drainage holes, mad-gallica. The pots have only one hole in the center, maybe the size of a silver dollar. Totally inadequate, so drilling extra holes will be the first order of business. On the plus side, those small holes make growing cannas and elephant ears really easy...:-)

Ideally I would like a standard that reblooms fast. Does anybody have experiences with floribundas?

If the garage *never* freezes, it is probably too warm to keep roses comfortably dormant. It should stay below around 40 for most of the winter.

There are different "zones" in my garage. Where I overwinter my fuchsias it stays around 45 to 50 all winter, except when it drops to single digits outside. Then the temp can dip to closer to 40F as well, while the front will probably be close to 30F. Closer to the garage door it will be around 40, unless another polar vortex hits, then it will drop below freezing there for a few days. I realize that depending on the outside temps I will have to move the pot around to keep the rose dormant. And maybe that's an argument against a tree rose. However, I am pretty good at overwintering things in my garage, so I am not worried about that aspect of keeping a rose standard from year to year.

Height wise on the standard its about 3.5-4ft tall or so in the ground. The first year I had it in the pot it rebloomed really well. Than I think it either got rootbound or dried out too fast in that small pot it was in and didn't do as well the next year, its in the ground now and doing great. This is the only standard I have, but I have read others on here talk about while Austin standards are expensive the quality is better than many others, and supposedly they use a thicker cane/stalk for their standards than many breeders. Do remember to brace it with a board or something to help it in high winds.

I have never grown them, but have seen at our local nurseries Don Juan standards, julia child standards, and mixed standards with both roses on it. I have been warned away from the 2 rose standards as supposedly invariably one rose dies off or the other one becomes dominant and it doesn't look as good.

There are 2 ways to shape standards as well. Some keep them in a ball tight around the top, me I let mine weep. Some on here have said they had to weigh down their roses with fishing weights to make them weep, but mine weeps on its on.
