Repairing triple track aluminum storms
Comments (4)I have the aluminum storms/screens you mention, but they don't have weatherstripping, as that would interfere with them opening in their tracks--mine have a sort of rubber channel in one side which allows the panel to slide a hair (hopefully) so it can be removed--most of the time it doesn't really work. Personally, the aluminum is going to suck heat right out of the house no matter what, so trying to weatherstrip them is worthless. Buy the screening and spline and let go with that. I've never tried the low-e films, but all films are notoriously hard to get to adhere, and with the metal being such a poor insulator, I think it too would be a waste of money. If you were to put it on the interior wooden windows, that might be a better choice. Just a side note, I"m going to be replacing my aluminums with wooden storms this year--made by me--I'll let you all know how it goes....See MoreHow to repair cat scratches in foam board insulation
Comments (20)This is a pretty silly discussion. If your house is in violation of the building code, the building department won't care who did the work. If they take any action at all, you will be ordered to correct it, not the state; the town's authority is over you, not the state. If you want the state to fix it, you will have to ask them directly; if they refuse, you should forget about it and move on. Unless they are unusually stupid, they would have asked you to sign a waiver of responsibility before doing any work on your property; try reading that "receipt" you signed. The discussion of building code requirements is probably irrelevant if this house is in VT. If VT has finally adopted a residential building code I haven't heard about it. Unless this particular town has adopted it's own code I suspect it is perfectly legal to expose polystyrene insulation board in this house. And you thought NH was the Live Free or Die state. "Let's just 'ASSUME', for a moment, that the insulation can be left uncovered" It's ridiculous to assume something is OK that could kill your family (and the cat) before they could get out of the house in a fire. Do you understand what toxic smoke does to you? You canâÂÂt just run through it and cough a bit like Bruce Willis in a movie. "Overcome by smoke" means you can't get to safety on your own. After nearly a hundred people died primarily from toxic smoke from burning exposed polyurethane foam in a night club in Warwick RI in 2003 you would think that foam insulation would get more respect as a killer. My son lived a few miles away and didn't answer his phone so I drove there to see if he had been in the fire so it left an impression on me. The Station nightclub was required by state law to have sprinklers installed when it was converted from a restaurant to a night club but the local building and fire officials issued permits without enforcing that requirement. Despite the negligence of the local officials and the foam supplier, after a long court battle it was the owners of the property and the pyrotechnic equipment who went to prison. Put the safety of your family ahead of energy conservation, academic responsibility debates, or annoying pet behavior while you can....See Moremy3dogs or others: furniture scratch repair
Comments (4)Thanks to Chijim for alerting me to this post! LOVE the chair frame; it one of my favorite styles that I re-do. Is it possible that the chair is...a faux painted non-wood product? I haven't run into that in my projects, but I would guess it's possible. Can you run your finger over the white areas to see if they are a hair's width lower than the surrounding untouched areas? In other words, are they the actual chair material, or have you been able to see actual wood in other areas nearby? I have some furniture touch-up markers, similar to these, but I see that they say they are for wood. Furniture Repair Kit Wood Markers - Set Of 13 - Markers And Wax Sticks I also have acrylic paints in many colors, and I could see blending some to touch up the areas, but then you'd have to seal those areas with something that would protect them, like a water-based poly....See MoreTitanium Eyeglass Frames “soldered” or brazed Repair? Comments (37)Thanks, mdln. and, Elmer, I suspected that could very well be the case. Or, the charge may be steep. Some of these optical shops are guarded and pricy. Most of them have a good thing going and are protective of their turf, contacts, sources and so on. That’s business and there is likely a good amount of competition. However, I bet I could find someone to do it — for a price. What if someone from one coast moves across country and wants to keep their pricy frames while updating the lenses? I already sent mine for repair and I am not crazy with the lenses in such a short frame — too much dithering to find the sweet spot. If they can’t be mended, I’ll Just use a hot glue gun after abrading the mend area (facetious). I’m resourceful (often). I once repaired an SUV rear windshield washer nozzle for $0.45 instead of paying for a whole new dealer installed washer unit. I just needed a teensy weensy patent tube. I was confident I’d stumble across something some day. Voila! A basketball inflating needle worked fine after I cut it to size, uncrimped it, and epoxied it into place. clt3 — I’m happy to hear you love your frames. For me, it was (before they broke) the short lenses and (apparently) the “narrow channel” archetecture of the lenses. Okay for static driving, but they were awful for me if I needed to keep swapping fields (say when shopping). I guess I’m a tactile intolerant sort — I’m easily irritated by things around my face — hair, bangs, glasses, smudged eyeglasses, eyelashes in my eyes (or goop), hats that have a wide brim, long sleeves when working, tight shoes or waistbands, people too close; intrusive sounds like fans or keyboard clicks. I like near monastic silence, but with cool, clean fresh air, sky, vegetation and wildlife. To me, this is normal. I have no idea how anyone can think or create in a stifling environment in dress clothing (tight shoes or heels, a suit or dress with constricting waistline or jacket. If I cannot row a boat in it, I don’t want it on me. (And no, I don’t want to smell your charcoal grill or suffer your leaf blower racket.) ETA “you” plural“ general...See Moreelbow
