Beginner trying to Decide between Climber & Shrub Rose

I'm starting a garden from scratch this year, and am planning to plant the Lady of Shalott rose--from the reading I've done, it seems like a good rose for a beginner and like it's fairly hardy--which will hopefully be useful since our summers in Baltimore, MD are quite hot! I'm planning to plant in a raised bed, which is about 5" x 7", with a wall behind it. The bed is surrounded by a stone ledge about a foot deep.
MY question is whether I should plan to grow the rose as a shrub, or whether it would be possible to train it onto the wall behind the raised bed. Would trying to bend the canes back over the foot deep ledge put too much strain on them or be bad in some other way?
