What are your plans for Begonias this year?
Comments (63)Excellent reports, enjoyed them! Hope things go well! Kind of bummed that you're moving, but hope you'll still seem right down the way, posting here & teasing us about your exotic new digs. Sure fed a lot of Begonia cuttings to pill bugs this year... inadvertently of course. Once they start eating it, there's no saving it though. Next year I won't put any Begonia cuttings in the ground during pill bug season. The ones that established before that and recovered from an unexpected frost are almost all still around. A few were then killed by flood. Then trampled by dogs... Sheesh! I need more shady spots out front, where it's safer. It's time here to take cuttings, I guess. Could have frost Fri night. Whatever stems in the ground look really good, tall enough, will probably snap 'em off and stick 'em wherever there's room - again. That will only take a few minutes, there's not much. Gaining more and more respect for wax B's. They seem to be tougher against all of this stuff in general, except floods of course. Potted plants were the only real 'winners' here. What a year!...See MoreHELP! Why am I killing my Begonias???
Comments (52)Now comes some tidbits from a Floridian! First, Rexes do not thrive in FL. They are grown in temp controlled greenhouses with swamp coolers, which is why you see them for sale. Although it may feel muggy if you are in one, the temp is lowered during the day and cooled at night - relatively. There are newer rex/rhizo hybrids I am growing with success, but pure rexes never make it in our hot, wet summers. It is truly the hot nights that kill them. 80F lows are not uncommon. In habitat, rexes see 68-70F at night. Secondly, whomever started this thread is growing in soil that is way too heavy. I use Fafard #2 with additional perlite and pine bark added. I also keep my begonias barely potted up - like a few inches larger when they need it. That ensures the soil does not stay wet, which kills begonias. If you struggle to pick up a bag of soil, it is too heavy. I have five foot canes in 3 gallon pots. I can easily pick up a 3 gallon cane with one hand - that is what they prefer. Keeping that in mind should help you grow great begonias! Picture is my bench of 'River Nile'! Greg Sytch, ABS Horticultural Corresondent...See MoreEyelash Begonia holes in leaves
Comments (6)I know what you mean about holes from pine needles especially on the thin leaved ones like 'Sinbad', 'Maurice Amey', and 'Benigo'. I have had a lot of damage from small catepillars on some of the hairy leaved ones like 'Art Hodes' and 'Boomer'. Also if fallen leaves from trees are allowed to sit on top of begonia leaves such as rexes, then holes may develop as well (is this from microbes, dry rot, lack of light, or what). Water left on begonia leaves can cause damage if left in intense sun. It can also lead to fungus problems when the temps are cool. Mine are outside and getting holes. (That doesn't sound very nice but what the heck)....See MoreRex begonia good for Wardian case? (type of terrarium)
Comments (15)That's a shame that your begonia got too big (kidding). You can start a new begonia by a leaf and keep it in a small pot so that it will fit or like you mentioned get a smaller leaf rex - there seems to be many more available these days. From these begonias in six inch pots to this which can be kept bonsai'ed Or this (started a few weeks earlier than the above tray and allowed more soil in a community tray. Here is one from Lowe's and a couple more This last one from Lowe's went into a tailspin - over watered at the store so I yanked it out of the pot so it would dry faster but lost all its leaves. New leaves are appearing now after a few weeks with bare stems. And one from Walmart - this is a little larger leaf variety though (it was around $3.50 in a 3 inch pot)...See MoreRoxanne Matthews
