Does anyone grow russell's Cottage Rose?
Comments (11)I have one under my kitchen window, against a south-facing wall. It has naturally sort of fanned itself out onto the wall in a very attractive fashion. I agree with Robert - this is a gorgeous plant for the abundant, healthy foliage alone. I would think it would be easy and beautiful to train along a fence. I am also thinking of getting some more to put elsewhere, and am really happy that this adorable rose is getting some good publicity and use. Another thought - it's thorns are vicious, but it doesn't just reach out and grab you like a lot of other roses do. Maybe because it is kind of dense and compact in it's habit, and heavily covered in foliage. I got bit working closely with the canes, but was really wrestling with the thing. I don't think it would nab passers-by, and it's not really bad to work with....See MoreHow do I train a climbing rose to grow on a fence?
Comments (8)Thanks everyone for your help. Buford, your Iceberg looks so graceful on the wall. I can only hope that mine will look 1/2 as good. I'm still a little unclear as to how the climbers get shaped..it looks like you might be trimming back the canes so as not to grow over the window? Or do you just let them grow at will? And what kind of wire are you using...it must have to be very strong...I have searched and searched the web and several rose books for specific answers on training climbing roses against fences and walls. I'm amazed at how little information I can find....See MoreWinner's Circle climbing rose - Anyone grow this?
Comments (7)I have it. Received it last summer from Jungs (sp?) I spray with banner max / macoczeb then compass. I had no disease. My neighbors had terrible blackspot etc. I now have buds and if it ever stops pouring and blooms I will post a pic. Actually, that is why I ordered it. Someone posted a pic here. I don't really favor red roses but it was so beautiful I couldn't resist....See MoreWhat to expect from a climbing rose against a house
Comments (5)Rats can use it as a way to get up on your roof and possibly into your attic. Ants don't bother much with roses. If it is windy you might be able to hear it banging against the house. You need a structure of some kind to tie the rose onto. Roses do not cling by themselves. You want 6"-12" spacers between the structure and the house to protect the house and give air circulation to the rose. Eden is not one to grow a huge number of canes, it is sparse enough not to cause problems. However since you are a mile from the ocean, the flowers are probably going to have a very hard time opening up. Not to mention the Rust which Eden is very prone to. Maybe something like 'Fourth Of July' which is going to open up better. A thornless or near thornless rose is much easier for a beginner to work with. Look at 'Crepuscule' or 'Renae' or 'Alister Stella Grey' all nearly thornless, easy to train and tie onto a trellis without scratching the heck out of you, all with much better disease resistance than the beautiful but troublesome 'Eden'. 'New Dawn' is a great rose for cold climates, not for So Cal....See Moresummersrhythm_z6a
