Fresh Lettuce
Comments (43)OT but we are currently in blizzard conditions with approximately 14 inches of snow so far. Highway snow gates are down, no travel in several counties around me, plow trucks have been pulled off the rural roads and highways. Temperature is dropping fast. I am entirely blocked off from civilization and I LOVE it. It has been two years since we have had a system come through with this intensity, and it is rather exciting to see once again. I plan on going on a walkabout around midnight. This much snow might mean I will have to use my snowshoes. Will see. If I never post again on GW, you folks will know what happened to me. But no worries, if nothing else someone will find me come springtime, probably with a frozen smile on my face, an empty candy bar wrapper in my hand, and an empty "medicine" flask in my pocket. ;) Time for me to push the envelope, to see if I still have what it takes. Life has been getting too comfortable, not taking chances and all. Wish me luck. -Tom...See MoreHAVE: Winter-Hardy Lettuce
Comments (3)Wow...so they are bolt resistant in the heat as well? planted in Jan and just now bolting? Incredible! I have some Romaine and Butterhead if your interested...my fall crop is just comming up, but I also have some left over seed. I can let some of the Fairy Tale Eggplant hybrid go to seed if you are into eggplant at all...cute little lavender steaked eggplants with edible skins (can see pics in a google search); they are short to med height plants and branching; great in containers too. More non-veggies on my list also....thanks Vera Here is a link that might be useful: My Exchange...See Morewinter sowing lettuce
Comments (7)You'll notice if an animal defecates in your garden, you see disturbed soil IF they've attempted to bury it. You could put some lemon juice in the final rinse water and soak your veggies for a few minutes, the acidic acid could have some neutralizing effect on any likely pathogens. Honestly, I just put the lettuce in a rinsing salad spinner, put it under the faucet and then crank the spinner to centrifuge out the moisture. With any fresh veggie you have to wash them very well. I have never had an animal "make" in my veggies, one of the cats digs around under the flowers but I could care if he does his business there, and he buries it anyway. Maybe you could get wire wicket fecning--it comes in two heights--about a foot tall and knee high. It's a bunch of folding sections and you just shove it into the ground--it has wire ends that you push right in. It's cheap for the foot high version, the taller one costs more but it's quite sufficient....See MoreWinter 'cut and come again' lettuce and greens (pics)
Comments (20)not only do those greens look awesome, the photography is awesome as well. thanks for sharing! i myself have built two coldboxes, 8" deep x 6' x 3' this year. i built them these dimensions because i had acquired 4 glass panels from a set of doors that were replaced at a nearby printing company. the wood i used is OSB (chipboard) recycled from shipping containers!! so everything except for the seeds has been recycled from the industrial park trash no more than a few blocks from my house. i have lettuce, turnips, beets, spinach, a pepper plant from the open garden that i transplanted and i'll be putting in a few celery plants in a couple days... to help warm it up i put in two liters of water and piled all the little rocks i've found in my yard in the center. i might add a length of pipe heating tape to the inside if winter gets to horrible, but, as far as i can calculate.. i'll have fresh greens and turnips all winter :D...See MoreSteve Lng Islnd NY Z-7a SunSet Z-34
