I'm redoing my front yard again. Need advice
Comments (9)Denise, I was going to ask if anyone had any suggestions on what to put in the place of the Magnolia. I don't think there's any way I could talk my husband into taking it out, but I was trying to figure out what would look good there just in case I did. I think the variety of Magnolia is Little Gem so it's not supposed to get big like the regular Magnolia, but I agree that it kind of blocks the view. I'm really not much of a tree person, which is why I was glad to get rid of the trees on the middle tier. I like planting flowers and the trees cause too much shade sometime. I would love to fill that center spot with daylilies and other flowers. I've been trying to get hubby to let me take out the Yaupon by the front door and put something lower growing. I would actually like to take out all of the yaupons, but I can't make up my mind what I would want there instead. We have a shorter stone wall in the backyard, so we had to do a little bit at a time also. Laurie...See MoreMy home exterior needs your advice!
Comments (7)Agree that the shutters should be removed entirely - they don't fit the windows. Fencelet on the corner too. Awnings should also go. And what are those white "wings" on either side of your front door - more shutters? Another likely candidate for removal! All of the white looks very stark against the brick right now, but it might look better once the shutters are removed, since there will be a lot less of it. As for an alternate color for the yellow section, it would help to see your roof, but personally I like grey with red brick. Once you decide on a color for the body of the house you can decide whether to paint the garage door the same color and how to handle other trim pieces, etc....See MoreNeed advice on exterior colors to bring my ranch into the 21st century
Comments (11)The panels below the windows were the builder's way of getting by cheaply. If you can afford to replace with full windows, it will improve it enormously. With the right windows, you may be able to use shutters on the top left ones. Changing the odd doors will be a big improvement too. If that' a flag pole out front, I'd get rid of that as well. If you like to fly the flag, get the gear to attach it to the home. http://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/residential-architecture-101-shutters/...See MoreNeed advice with exterior colors of my house!
Comments (8)Erin, that's false (about the heat thing). I'm in SoCal too and just did a very dark charcoal roof (cement tiles). They have a CCR rating on tiles meant just for dispersing heat. They also have a 'gel' type of underlayment that goes under the tiles. It's helps to keep the roof cool. Loor at Boral and Eagle roofing. I used the tiles from Eagle, and the gel thing from Boral. They also let you know what colors are available in your area. I had mine done last summer. my home is a bit on the spanish side, so I kept w/the cement tiles. They looked much darker on the ground. once on the roof, they look like a light gray, so keep that in mind when choosing a color. I did the White stucco, very dark trim and some slight light gray accents. I have wood look garage doors and wood fencing. basically used the bottom three. You could also use the Navy if you like. So for your home, (and I love how your roof is angled) the first thing I see is the garage door window grilles. I'd replace those w/something a bit more modern looking. (u can order them on Amazon) Something like this, with the added carriage hardware, would update the door. (and you're going to paint it too!) the next is the porch post. maybe beef it up a bit? so here are some diff stucco colors and combos to give you an idea Basic white but his has black windows and a newer modern garage door. See how the wood siding accent really warm up the exterior? you could add wood to the underside of your front entry, maybe a wood door, or a wood post. Dark gray stucco with black trim around the white windows. again w/the wood. I love this one and think something like this would look great w/your home. notice the garage door windows similar house to yours. light gray roof and dark gray/black stucco. the wood accents are perfect here. I love this look how about a blue/gray? wood accents in the orange tone really compliment it well...See Morepetlovermarcie
