moving a rose bush...yikes!
Comments (29)And there we have it folks...in the end, I may have no choice in the question 'bare root or root ball'. Thank you mad. Since I have no tree spade and it will be just me, myself and I, making this grand move, I need to form a plan of attack. How does this sound...cut back all the canes to about 12" - 18" making sure to leave some leaves. Dig a hole starting about 12" - 15" from the base of the rose bush all around, lifting gently with every shovel full. As I feel the shovel blade hit a large root I will losen the soil, reach into the soil with my hands, expose the root and make the cut...gasp...do that all the way around. At that point I should have a good idea if it is holding together. If it is I will try to lift it out of the soil, root/soil ball together and place it in a plastic tub. But if the soil seems to melt away from the roots as I work I will do my best to cut all the roots and gently lift the stubby little sucker out. I will try to leave the roots as long as I can. If I am not able to replant that same day I will leave it in the plastic tub with it's root ball intact and keep it moist. If it indeed turns out to be a bare root, I will keep it in the shade and moist until I get it in the ground. OR...should I stick it in a tub of soil until I am ready to plant? How much time would that give me? Digging...I have thought about taking some cuttings before I start and I think I will. This bush is so full of new growth right now I know I could get more than enough...even enough to share! Do I need to use a rooting hormone? I just make the cut, strip the leaves from the bottom and stick it in a pot will rich soil and keep it moist, right? I've used plastic bags over pots of cuttings in the past and something tells me that's what you do with roses...Bell jars or a cloche? What an adventure! How do we become so attached to our plants? York, that experiment with the african violets sounds interesting. I'm not a fan of irradiation in general and I'm not sure how I would feel about using it to manipulate plants. But it's still interesting. I love my AVs OK, thats it, Kids. I will let you all know how it goes. I still think my original location for replanting is the one I will try. It's in the front of the house where it gets good morning sun, from sun up until just after noon. I would rather have good sun, unobstructed for 4 - 6 hours than sun that is 'hit or miss' all day. I'll take pictures and let you know how it goes. Thanks, Gang. You have all been very helpful to me as I begin this process. sooey...See MoreOh goodness. What to wear...
Comments (30)Ok, I pulled out my dressier black dress. It's an Alfanti, knee length with a 60's style fitted top and flares out at the waist with large, inverted pleats (not full, just flared). It has a wide belt. Just tried it on and it still fits perfectly (thank Gawd). It's a very flattering cut but I'll have to drag out my dressier pearl type jewelry because of the neckline. I'll wear my newer Ecco heels with sheer black tights. Now I need a jacket because it's sleeveless. Maybe my vintage black cardigan with the sequins? (Ugh. Then I'd be in all black... That can't be good, right?) Need jacket to lighten up the outfit. Will dig further into my closet and ask Aimee if she has something. Somehow most of my jackets end up being black. Oye. I don't want to look like the Grim Reaper. And yes, I'm totally out of my element dress wise but not class wise. LOL. I texted Aimee yesterday to say all I had to wear was pajamas. She texted me back, suggesting my Leopard fleece set, tucked into boots with a wide belt. LOL!!!...See MoreYIKES! Cuban Pork Roast...can I cook it in 2.5 hrs?
Comments (17)Shaun, if you still have that thread could you post it..it was Jan 2005. I must have just printed it out one time when I was deleting a lot of saved html files. Basically she used some Adobe seasoning, sazon, garlic powder and black pepper, poked holes in the roast and rubbed the seasoning in, and then rubbed it with olive oil. In the bottom of the marinade pan/pot she added sliced onions and white wine. I am marinating mine in Mojo Criollo and and will brown it in olive oil. LindaC says to then put it in a covered roaster and cook for 5 hrs (Shaun's was a 8lb roast) @ 325. Baste every hour and then more frequently after 2.5 hrs. In the last hour push the onions off the top of the pork ( so I guess they are on top for the majority of cooking. I'd say that means a whole lotta onions.) When done to fork tender, tent meat, skim fat and make gravy which will be quite dark. And even better, I'll ask Sol to give her details. Maureen...See MoreShoulder....da** you Oakley! ;-)
Comments (30)Hi Guys! * Yaya- I see the P.A. I saw on Jan 3 on Feb 2 I think. I'll ask about that shot(s)! What types of shots are there for shoulders? B4 my new knee in Sept. '14, I had that $1,000 Synvisc shot that Feb. Didn't really do much, but we knew going in that it was a crapshoot. * Msmeow- OH NO!! Yikes....that sounds painful! I mentioned when my injury happened, I was throwing my arms out to the side to keep from falling. That's when I got shot.........in my shoulder.... ;-) Sure felt like it anyway! My PT guy says he'd like for me to avoid injections, since they'll just mask what's really going on. I know that makes sense, but...... I'll keep doing my shoulder/back exercises, since they'll strengthen/support the whole shoulder mechanism, & its operation. Along those lines, it'll help keep an upright posture. I don't wanna turn into the letter "C" like SO many people do, just cuz they never learned how to (or cared??) do simple exercises!!!!! * Oakley- Yes, keeping the shoulders DOWN AND BACK when moving thru an exercise motion keeps the vulnerable "Cuff" muscles & tendons from hitting the Acromio-Clavicular (AC) Joint just above it. That causes SO many issues/problems. >>> The stronger your back & shoulder-blade muscles are, the better your shoulder can handle a load. So many of us have such weak back muscles, because they're never used!! Ever hear the word "Atrophy"?! SQUEEZE THAT EGG ON YOUR SPINE!! ;-) Faron...See MoreOakley
