Source bare root white bleeding heart?
Comments (1)It really shouldn't matter if these are purchased bare root or potted. I also think it would be difficult to find these mail order as bare root plants. I've never seen them this way. I suspect there's another reason your potted ones didn't survive. Possibly the time of the year you purchased and planted them, were they dried out in their pots for any length of time, were they watered adequately when you planted them, etc. etc. Kevin...See MoreBleeding Heart Planting Question
Comments (2)Assuming you're referring to dicentra spectablis, the old fashioned bleeding heart, they should send up new growth after planting over the next week or so. It's later than bare-root dicentra is normally planted, since their flowering season is nearing an end in this are (zone 6/7). If you don't get growth this year, you should get some early next spring. They go dormant over summer....See MoreQ on Dicentra Spectabilis roots. (Bleeding Heart)
Comments (4)Wouldn't hurt to give it a try and you may well get new plants. I'm just noticing new dicentra spectabilis plantlets all over now this season since I didn't deadhead the spent flowers - a nice bonus for a plant that does very well for me, and that no pests bother, in zone 4. The roots on older plants do break easily so the literature seems to be correct in saying they transplant best when young....See MoreHow do you plant a Bleeding Heart bare root?
Comments (4)Boy Chris, I don't know specifically but I bet you want to get them in the ground pretty soon so since nobody else has posted yet I give a stab at it. Pretty much all of my bareroot perennials get the same treatment- dig a hole;build a soil cone in the middle of it, spread the roots around the soil cone while holding the neck of the plant, then fill in the soil around the plant keeping the crown of the plant about soil level, water well and wait. My bleeding hearts reseed like crazy and babies come up all around so they can't be too fussy of a plant. I would probably soak the roots for a little while in water before I planted it just to rehydrate them a little too. Good luck...See Morekimpa zone 9b N. Florida.
