Need help to design a backyard
Comments (4)What direction is one facing when one looks out over the fence? Is the patio in need of shade? It looks like you might be CA, so I imagine you have to plant with wildfire protection as a consideration? With that in mind, are a fire pit and sparks an issue, or do you want it to be gas fired? How large is the current paved patio? Could you combine the fire pit and the sitting area? What room does the door lead into, and where is the kitchen from here? Is there easy access to the kitchen from somewhere in the patio area? Would more paving, something like decomposed granite, or artificial turf fit into your plans? The current lawn looks fairly bad. Do you need a play area for kids or is this an adult only household that might not need a lawn? Is there irrigation currently, and is that something you would want to/be allowed to continue? Is there a HOA that controls how you can plant or design your yard?...See MoreHelp Needed by Landscape Designer for Flagstone Backyard Patio -Please
Comments (20)@greenfish1234 Thank you again for your input. I'm attaching a better picture of the back door area. Our door is currently a slider door - not sure if that will be switched in the future to a french door. How far past the door should the steps/landing go? The further we go, the further we cut into that dead space next to our family room wall (to the right of the door). Also, the deeper the total of depth of the steps/landing combined, the deeper the bed gets to the left of the steps/landing, unless we don't make that bed as deep as the steps/landing, but not sure if that will look right. I'm also attaching a pic of landing/steps I found on line. Not that I want curved steps or that material, but was wondering if I could turn that dead space into a raised planter on the landing. That way I can soften that area. If I did this though, not sure how far to bring out the planter - just to the last step, or to the edge of the back of the family room wall. In this pic, their dead space is probably 1/2 that of mine....See MorePlease help with backyard renovation design
Comments (17)Thanks fnmroberts! It can get hot here, so artificial turf isn’t ideal but I would love it for lots of reasons! And thanks Ikloes! Yes, I think I got it.. I’ll work on that! One issue is that the back fence panels are removable bc we have a huge slope and in the spring we have to have it trimmed and raked to the bottom. For fire protection. They remove a panel or 2 to remove the grasses. We actually have large gates on both sides of our house (front) so the truck can back up right into the yard and up to the slope. So I do need to leave a bit of space for that. Im thinking we may only need that on the left side, so maybe I can figure out the right side better. Thanks!!...See MoreNeed Help with Design / Landscaping Ideas for near 1.5 acre backyard!
Comments (8)Ideas/considerations for when you talk with a real landscape architect: - how much gardening and of what kind are you/your wife wanting to do? Flowers, veggies, easy-care shrubbery? - how much lawn do you want to manicure and mow every week (personally I'd minimize the lawn, maximize your lovely woodland and natural meadow space). - if you can get electric to the hangar, do it. - cohesive yard: maybe a three-rail wood fence (backed with wire to contain pets) around the whole perimeter. If you do a fence, remember to include gates at strategic places wide enough for mowers, carts, etc. - any DIY skills or inclination? - dogs: You look like you're out in the country a bit, and big barky dogs are not a bad thing to have near the house. I like having a doggie door to give dogs access any time they want to their own dog run (an area maybe 6' wide by 15' long, fenced with 5 or 6' tall chain link). That way they can go in and out by themselves, and be contained in an area that you know is safe and escape-proof (deer, rabbits, and squirrels are such fun to chase). A normal fence can surround any other area you want them to play in while you're able to keep a closer eye on them. Not sure any of this was of help, but good luck anyhow....See MoreYardvaark
