Can someone explain IKEA cabinet heights to me?

I'm planning on IKEA cabinets for a small kitchen remodel. Here's the confusion, their tall pantry type cabinets come in 2 heights. Either 80" or 90". So if you are trying to put a pantry cabinet at the end of a regular run of cabinets the tops don't line up as their uppers come in 2 heights, 30" or 40". So 36" base plus 18" clearance above counter plus 30" upper equals 74" with a 40" upper equals 84". With a 40" upper you get 94".

I see in their catalog tons of pics with the tops all lining up. And no filler up there that I can see. It doesnt look like the clearance above the counter is different than the standard 18"!

I'm so confused!

This is an example of what I'm trying to do in my kitchen, first pic is with a 30" second with a 40" using a 90" pantry and a 20" fridge upper.

Do they mean the cabinet itself is 80" or 90" and you add a 4" base? I've read all through the site and didn't find an answer.
