Need advice on whether I need to divide my canna in containers

Two years ago, I planted cannas in large double walled resin containers (22") and the instructions say to divide in two years. I live in AZ and we not had any temperatures below freezing in the last two years. Anyway since it was time to divide, I cut down the foilage and noticed I could not see any potting soil - the rhizomes completely cover the pot and the inside wall of the container has bulged out to almost reach the outside wall. Now do I really need to divide? Will there be any problems if I leave them as is? As it stands, the only way to remove them would be to cut (destroy) the containers. Or I could try to break off the rhizomes using a shovel but would that kill the rhizomes?
