Making progress on the birds
Finally have been able to make some progress on the Raptor blocks I started at Retreat. At retreat I was able to complete the first 5, and in the last week I've done the last 2.Screech owl: (He will probably go on the back as part of the label)
Moorpork owl:

Golden eagle:
Falcon:
Great Horned owl: (he'll get black & gold circles appliqued for eyes)
Snowy owl:
When looking for more designs, I found a lady in South Africa who is AMAZING at creating paper pieced patterns! I sent her some photos for a peregrin falcon, kestral, and Barn owl. For a very low price, she created paper pieced patterns for me. They will be the last 3 I need.
All blocks will get the grey borders, and then will be placed on a background around my big bald eagle in flight.

Making progress toward orchid goals
Comments (26)My goal at the moment is to cut back my collection by at least 30 plants overall, preferably the large-sized ones which I am no longer enamoured with or plants which have been doing poorly. I have been gradually switching over to more miniature and compact-growers over the past couple years and that has noticeably increased the space in the GH, but nowhere near enough. I have been tossing, giving away or selling the excess orchids, but need to be more strict with myself and dump even more. The ideal GH environment is where there is room to walk down the aisles without having to turn sideways and where plants are not crammed up against each other -- which increases the likelihood of disease and pests. Of course, I will never reach that goal, but it is a good direction to be aimed in. It is very difficult to part with plants, even those you really don't like anymore. They kind of stick to you and make you feel guilty when you want to unload them, and then you make all kinds of excuses and promises so you don't get have to get rid of them. But, there comes a time when you have to sit down and think about the direction your hobby is taking. I found, in clearing out a small wall area of the GH two years ago, that I had an ideal environment where I could grow Tolumnias like weeds which I had never realized before; in the before, I had merely killed them. The few big, mostly Cattleyas, which had been in that space didn't give me near the enjoyment that these mini Tolumnias do, both species and hybrids, and I still have room for at least a dozen more....See MoreI'm making progress
Comments (24)I sowed my first jug (a few broccoli and red cabbage for the early spring veggies) last weekend. It has been 20-30 degrees colder than normal, so I'm waiting to do the others when I can be a ltitle more comfortable out on the patio! Last year was my first ws, and I only did about 30 jugs, but I sowed heavy and got ALOT of plants. DH wasn't crazy about the milk jugs in back, but like Laura said, "If Mama ain't happy..." After he saw all the plants, he was very impressed and he hasn't said a word about the milk jugs in the garage all summer. I did get some lovely compliments on the flowers from neighbors, too. My next-door neighbors both want me to show them this year! You will be vindicated even if a couple containers don't work out! Comments (16)They get to my area early. We've had a couple here for several months. I have had as many as 12 in past years. The most I've ever seen was when we were at FlamingO's house. They were everywhere! Of course she has lots of feeders out, many flowering baskets and a beautiful flowering tree (can't remember what kind it was). Comments (8)It will be nice not to have to stake them. I think the Pacific Ocean dahlias are supposed to stay under 3 ft. The rest I will have to stake because our soil is somewhat sandy with no rocks. Something wrong with a place that has absolutely no rocks imho lol !! My red and purple bed will unwittingly have some magenta in it during the hottest summer months because thats what my deep reds do here in the heat. In theory, its red and purple tho lol. I do have some Black and Blue salvia in there so it will have a little blue as well. I wish I could grow tulips here. Lilacs too! I can only grow tulips as annuals or put them in the fridge. Some winters we actually get cold like a few nights in low 20's or high teens F. Many winters we barely freeze so its totally unreliable on what we can grow. I have a 'greenhouse' I put tender stuff in. Like you, most of my garden is a mish mash of all kinds of colors. I get an idea of what I want in an area and that lasts a while but then I get too many plants and they all end up crammed together like a rainbow of colors lol....See Morevasutx (storiedquilts.com)

7 years agoI finally finished another one. Wasn't too bad, until tonight when I was putting sections together, only to find a piece that was the wrong color. It happened to be located smack dab in the center of the block. It wasn't much fun replacing it. ;(
I think I only have one more block--a barn owl. The rest of the weekend will include bordering the last 3 finished birds and pealing paper. Then maybe getting the pattern ready for the barn owl.

7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoI've gotten all the birds done, and here's the layout I worked up with some non-quilting friends the other day. Next is to trim the bird blocks and then stitch them and the gold frame down to the background. (can't get the picture to flip... looks fine before I load it)
