Multiple 3-way switch wiring help
Comments (4)"We would like to keep the 3-way switches but also add another set of 3-way switches so we can control half of the recessed cans at a time. " You will have to break up the existing string of lights and add another switch at each location. Each switch will control half the lights. You need to add up the loads on the existing circuit to determine how much more it can support. You are generally limited to 80% of the circuit capacity (15 A or 20 A)...See More3 way switch wiring 14/3 all the way to the light
Comments (1)From the 2nd switch you only need two conductors, a hot and a neutral, going to the light. The hot will come from the "common" terminal on the switch. No reason to replace the cable, just leave the 3rd wire disconnected. Whomever wired it to begin with probably either had extra 14/3 around, or wanted flexibility, for example to power a fan and a light separately....See MoreNeed quick 3 way switch HELP!!
Comments (12)Let me add this is off a garage subpanel that has 2- 20A breakers tied together so I assume its sharing a neural. The extra black wire in box 1 controls one of three lights (single pole, one of the red travelers are capped). Is it possible to cap one of the travelers in box 2 (3way switch, 3 wires in box) and installing a single pole there? Is there a hazard keeping it as it is now. ?? ie: One box with single pole controling all 3 lights. Second box with 3 way only controling 2 of the lights when power is on at switch one.... no power to switch when switch one is off. Again about the hazard, is this a fire/shock hazard or one of those things that it works or it doesnt?...See MoreTwo new 3-way switches not working; need troubleshooting help
Comments (26)The better (less confusing) way to check a switch is to disconnect it and test it with an ohm meter between the common and each of the traveler terminals. If you have continuity between the common and one traveler terminal when the switch is in one position, and between the common and the other traveler terminal when the switch is in the other position, then the switch is good. With the mtvhike method, it could still just be wired wrong. (Inconclusive) As you can see, there is more than one way that only one or zero terminals could be hot if it is wired wrong. Or even that all 3 terminals are hot....See Morechristadou32
