jumpstarting

a b

While housesitting, I occasionally start up the owner's car in the garage. Well, the other day, nothing. The dash and interior lights came on, but when turning the key, no engine sound (and the interior light dimmed). With the cold winter, I figured dead battery. I found jumper cables but it still didn't start. I'm thinking of what might have gone wrong:

1. The last time the battery was replaced in the good car, they seem to have coated the whole area around the positive post with some kind of yellow/green paint. Maybe that messed up the connection to the jumper cable.

2. I attached the ground cable to a bolt of the bad car, as recommended in the owner's manual. The bolt looked a bit rusty, but there were a couple of sparks.

3. I attached the cables with the good car running. Reading up, maybe it should have been off.
Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thx.
