I'm just a few miles south of you, so our climates should be similar. SGM did quite well with BS in my no spray garden, but never really took off the way I expected. After EVH began growing wildly, SGM just faded away and recently I found it had finally died. Perhaps it was the clone I had since everyone else seems to rave about it. Two different looks of EVH: Did I say I love this rose!...See MoreWill Guardian Angel turn solid green?
Comments (13)ok deb ... if you are a relative newbie... lets get a few things straight in your head ... first.. the name... its momma was blue angel .. hence the play on words to include angel in its name.. ergo.. if it reverts.. it reverts to what it came from which is the BLUE... 'Blue Angel' .. with me so far??? .. it can NOT revert to a green ... it might mutate to a green.. but not REvert ... [which means the one frank is standing next to is BA] now.. ALL BLUE HOSTA.. are actually a green hosta with a blue wax on top of the leaf ... and when that blue is worn off by heat.. overhead watering.. etc.. the green hosta underneath will show.. that is NOT a reversion.. nor the plant changing.. that is a hard life/season ... now.. BA ... happens to be viridescent ... see link.. which means its center start light colored.. and darken as the season goes on ... and again.. that does NOT mean the hosta is reverting.. nor 'changing' ... the leaf is changing.. but not the underlying plant.. if that makes sense.. [gold standard on the other hand.. starts one color.. and lightens in the center.. and i forget that term] how about it.. make any sense??? ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreAnyone growing 'Guardian Angel'??
Comments (13)Guardian Angel has a 'checkered' history of losing it's SO INTERESTING pattern, with widely varied experience. My Wife's registration of her H. 'Beauty Queen' in 2009 is very similar, and here, at least is stable, but it's being trialed in several other gardens before it may be worth 'marketing' it. See good ol' hl.org for pics from here. Kathy Sorenson bought one via the Brian Skaggs memorial auction last year but lost it. We sent her another last week. As usual, to fully ensure a stable and mature hosta to market takes many, many years. See the infamous one that everyone is reverting to PEE DEE GOLD, or all the failed x-rayed ones (e.g. 'Embroidery'), or what I jokingly refer to as 'Green Revolution', one that certainly should have undergone a much longer evaluation before becoming a HOTY, huh? Man, O Man, I sure hope H. 'Empress Wu' (which I still refer to, out of deference to the late Brian Skaggs as 'Xanadu Empress Wu', and may talk to Virginia about petitioning the powers to be to change to that . . .) stays true, woohoo! FWIW, hh...See MoreGuardian Angel
Comments (12)How cool that you have a neighbor to trade for something great like that. Kate, I agree, you need to get this hosta! I got this hosta in 2010. I stopped at a place that used to be my favorite nursery - very different stuff at this place with a lovely wooded path section with many shade plantings and sculptures. The owner had recently closed the retail aspect to focus on his landscaping business, but was still selling a few things one day a month. So he and I were chatting and I had picked out a couple of hostas to buy. He wanted to show me something up in the wooded section. So we were walking up the path and we passed a hosta planted on the left. I said, " oh that's a really nice Guardian Angel". He was so impressed that I knew the name of it so he grabbed a shovel and cut me out a fat division right on the spot. GAve it to me free!...See MoreJackie P
