Do these work together for you?
Comments (8)I am reading the "first" and "second" to be the two breakfast room options -- the third and fourth photos. A fixture similar to the last photo (I posted the wrong one) and the island fixture were the ones I was about ready to order but was looking for manufacturer info and to see if I could get extra shades to make the glass match. It appears these are imports sold under and adopted name and I hesitated to pull the trigger. Here is the one I meant to post -- similar idea but a bit lighter and with some curves to the arms: Having left and come back, I'm not really liking the wood one now (which is why I try to walk away and come back to anything I will have to live with before pulling the trigger). I had been looking it in a lineup with it next to the fan -- which is how it would hang (the fan and breakfast room fixture hang in the same plane and under the same vaulted ceiling while the island fixture hangs from a different ceiling height and over several feet). I was starting to look at wood fixtures because DH still prefers the one we had to return twice and has liked wood in general. On the other hand, he rejects all fabric shades, all drums, anything he says has spindly candlesticks, mercury glass, and entire other groups of fixtures. He had to have this fan. I never thought it would be this hard to find a fixture or two to make it work. This post was edited by lascatx on Fri, Jan 24, 14 at 0:17...See MoreDo you think these light fixtures work together?
Comments (19)Our entryway is almost a joke - see what I mean? (the picture is taken from the living room, looking at th front door). I don't have a picture of the dining room, but here's the layout of that part of the house, so you can kind've get the idea of the relation between the entry and the dining room. (Ignore the kitchen/ breakfast area - this isn't a good drawing. The big red rectangle is a see-through fireplace between the living room and office.) I decided to go ahead and order the foyer fixture. As Amy said, I think they both have the shiny/silver+lucite look to them. In case you can't tell, the chandelier has lucite (or some sort of clear material) in the center and under each of the shades. The lucite makes the chandelier a little less traditional, in my opinion. I'll post pics when I get the new fixture up - thanks for the opinions!...See MoreBoys in daughters old room? Will it work?
Comments (52)Lascatx-- "If the valance is old, you got your money's worth and it's okay to let it go." I smiled when I read that. It reminded me of trying to get one of your kids to let go of their security blankie or Pooh. I remember how much fun Hannah and I had doing her room and I guess I do need to think about letting it go ;-) Mtnrredux -- love Company Store. Looked for the denim duvet cover and only found the bed skirt. Do you think the duvet cover is discontinued? I love that look. I thought trundles always came with beds, I didn't realize you could purchase them separately till you pointed it out. I don't know if one would fit under our beds. Love the encapsulated mattress idea too. Geokid--had never really looked into bamboo shades, because our old lake has has them in the kitchen and they don't darken. They came with the house. I just looked at them again online and was pleasantly surprised at the selections, colors, and that you can get them with an optional liner to darken the room. Thanks for the suggestion. Busy bee-- when my dds were in high school and even older, we had girls all over our basement. Sprawled everywhere. Wouldn't have had it any other way :-) the night before oldest dd's wedding 2 yrs ago, I had 8 bridesmaids "sleep over" . They don't mind sharing, but you are right boys will not as time goes on. Anitamo and Ellen-- love the sleeper chair, but couldn't find a picture of it opened up. Had no idea there was any such thing. 2 would fit nicely in their room. Sherman--I loved your story. That your dd wanted to do that says something special about how she feels about "home". Anne-- thank you for your opinion. We are moving them down there this afternoon and I'm leaving the valance just for now. So well see :-) Geokid--I did ask for honest opinions and I appreciate yours. Jennangelcat--my boys don't care. At least they say they don't. Which is surprising because they are so different. One is sweet and sensitive, the other is all boy. I should just make the room neutral...and let it evolve! Oakleyoak--thanks. Your sleepover sounds fun. The white blinds are definitely going. That was one spendy thing I got for this house that I'm gradually replacing throughout. Bugs die inside them, no good way to clean them, etc. About the boys.... They are definitely different animals than my girls were. Thanks all. Woke up with a little anxiety about not having my "babies" across the hall from me after 10 yrs . Guess I need to get over it and get to work. Stay tuned for pictures after move!...See MoreHow to make these two rooms work together
Comments (35)Another great way to unify the two rooms is painting them the same color. See if you can match the off white paint. Lower your art to 5" above the mantel and flank it with your two lanterns on one side and the tall candlestick (painted to match the lanterns) on the other. Then take your color cues from the art and start sprinkling it around the 2 rooms and the kitchen. Try matching sisal rugs in both rooms. They should easily slip under the front 1/3 of the sofas (under all of the chaise) and then extend past the two ends by at least a foot or more. Add big art over the sectional as grover shows. Remove the stick arrangement and get new end tables that arrive 1" above or below the arms of your beige sofa. Top with a pair of lamps that bring the overall height of tables with lamps to 58-64" above the floor. The bistro height table and chairs is blocking the two rooms from each other; a standard height long trestle table and chairs, with a bench at the wall side, will open things up for a more unified feeling. I would exchange the fan and dining light for something more up-to-date. I'd especially want the dining light to cast its light upward toward the ceiling. Downward shining lights wash out the food and cast ugly nose and hair shadows on the diners' faces. Trestle table with chairs and bench...See MoreRelated Professionals
