can I repurpose sideboard or china cabinet to fishtank stand?
Comments (2)You can absolutely do that. I put a 55gal on an old (not antique) sideboard - cut an access hole in the back panel so that I could house the air pump, etc inside the cabinet (along with tons of supplies) and had the tank on top. It looked great - much prettier than the 'style deficient' stands that are sold for aquariums....See MoreChina hutch questions
Comments (5)What you would be doing would be similar to the built-ins I have in my living room, except the bottom doors wouldn't go anywhere -- or could you put in some shallow space? -- a few inches could give you a place for some very clever options rather than nothing at all. Even recesses between the studs can give you space for charging stations, phone books (standing up), a horizintal magazine or newspaper rack, storage for bottles and cans. The drawers fronts could have pulldowns for charging stations, batteries, flashlights, pens and pencils. If you think of a way to capture some space, the fronts become clever instead of fake. ;-) As for the shelves, I would order them with matching moveable shelves, try them and get glass shelves cut to replace them if you find the paint dings up too easily. I replaced mine with glass, but in my case it was to not distract from the leaded glass in the doors of those cabinets....See MoreRepurpose old cabinets into kitchen hutch??
Comments (11)idrive: I saw that article, have it in my "save for later" folder. I will have to dig it out, thanks for reminding me. pps: I am leaning towards the beadboard as I am trying to "recreate" a piece that was in my kitchen growing up. We called it the dish cabinet. I wish I had pictures of it, but my 84 year old dad has a pretty good visual memory of it, as does one of my brothers. I think that apartment was 50 years old when they moved in in 1952. It was more built-in then I will do, but it was every color my mother ever painted the kitchen: pink (50's-60's), Avacado green (of course the 70's) and finally Harvest Gold before we moved out in 1982. I bet it's still in that kitchen, I just wonder what color it is now! As a nod to the nostalgic feeling I wanted in my kitchen, I painted the walls "fresh avacado", a pale green like the inside of an avacado. Now I've got to come up with my own "modern" color for my piece!...See MoreChina Hutch in the Bedroom - What say you?
Comments (30)Thanks everyone for all of the feedback :) I like using pieces where they work rather than having rules. Yesterday was moving day and sadly when we unwrapped the top piece after several years I realized the shelves weren't set up in a way that would easily work for my intended use. Since it's an antique and I know his mom wouldn't approve of me reworking it, I left it there. Thanks again :) We did get a few really great pieces and two sets of China (one german that was his grandmothers). So, it was a great move all in all....See More- 9 years agolast modified: 9 years ago
