Thanksgiving or Christmas cactus? Groundhog day cactus?
Comments (56)Purple, I've enjoyed reading this thread and wanted to add my $.02 worth. The first thing I noticed is that the stems appear to be flacid.....wilty. That could be caused by over OR under watering.....whichever might cause the roots from being able to access water. In this case, I wonder if the water you're applying is evacuating before soaking the whole soil volume. One thing about these plants (all plants) is that though they need to dry out somewhat between drenchings, the potting soil must be completely saturated on watering day. This is true for all plants, even those cacti that are native to extremely arid regions. Have you ever seen "Medicine Man ", a movie starring that gorgeous specimen of manhood Sean Connery? It takes place in the rainforest of Brazil. There are scenes of my lovely Sean ziplining through the forest canopy, sharing the scenes with huge epiphytic cacti and other plants. Really neat movie. Plus, it stars Sean Connery. I get that it's difficult to understand how those prickly, barrel shaped desert cacti have ANYTHING to do those graceful rainforest plants. Here's what I "think " is a good analogy, but don't laugh at me toooooo hard if it really stinks. Take your dog into consideration for a moment. It's a mammal. So are you and the pesky squirrels in your yard. Big differences amongst those three mammals yet they share essential similarities. Still with me? Now, think of those incredible bottlenose dolphins familiar to anyone living in coastal areas. Superficially, they seem to have so little in common with your dog, but those porpoises are just another type of mammal. They live in a different environment, for sure, but the similarities are much more important than the differences. You just need to try to provide the kind of environment your dolphin needs. :-) Dorie...See MoreWANTED: Thanksgiving or Christmas cactus

Comments (32)I have two hanging cactus plants that I would like to identify. The plants resemble Christmas etc only one has very large leaves and blooms with tiny little pale yellow blooms all around the leaf at each point. the other has smaller twisted leaf with a yellow bloom at the end of a stem and then a round bulbus growth in it's place. I can take pictures of them as they are now, but lost pictures of the blooms when my computer crashed. Thanks for any help you can give....See MoreChristmas, thanksgiving and easter cactus
Comments (3)Dear jordanmichellee1989, as I was going through the comments today to see if anybody had posted pictures of Christmas cactus or Thanksgiving cactus I came across this post. I love looking at the pictures and reading all the info people have. Since you were so kind to offer some cuttings to yenika I was wondering if you would have a few extra that I could have. Is yours the true Christmas cactus, Schlumgergera x buckleyi? I had something similar happen to me. I had to go out of town for a month (which ended up being 2 months) but had someone watering my plants for me while gone. Well needless to say they drenched my Real Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera x buckleyi) I had and my Thanksgiving cactus too. So I lost them from rot. I have one pink Thanksgiving cactus my friend has since given me that I could send cuttings from or pay for postage of course. Sorry for the long monologue. I know it is too cold to send them now but thought I would ask now and do this in the spring. I live outside of Chicao, IL. Thanks for your thoughts ahead of time. Sharon...See Moresocks
