Eyegolf, I am going to get the showroom models of both the combi-steam and the convection oven at the appliance dealer where I plan to buy all my appliances... when I finally figure out everything else I want! This particular store is in the process of their own expansion/remodel and they want to keep this display up for a while, which is fine with me as our whole-house remodel plans are still being refined! The combi-steam looks like it has a little hard water residue along one bottom edge but the convection oven has never been used. They have the door swing I need and the saleslady said she'll have the combi-steam cleaned up and looking like new for delivery. I have $2000 down on the pair I'm getting the two units for $4800 total, plus they're giving me a 5-year warranty; how could I pass it up? Now if only I could be so sure on the rest of my appliances! Gizmonike, I really love your kitchen! Every time you post that photo of the pair of Gaggs I print it off and drool on it. If you don't mind me asking, what is your wall faced with? And what is your floor? Were your VG fir cabinets made at a local cabinet shop or were they a "name brand?" VG fir is the signature wood type here in my area in northern CA and I had the cabinets locally made for the our last house which we built from the ground up 11 years ago. Cabinets were delivered unfinished and I did all the finishing work myself to save some $ then (a big job I don't care to repeat... if I never see another piece of sandpaper in my life I will be one happy woman!) I am hoping to find a company that uses a conversion varnish or similar to give the surface a good, hard finish. Thanks in advance for any information you can send my way.

Welcome to the country and to the forum. I expect you will see many brands similar to what you see in Australia. L.A. is a very good shopping city and you could go one of two ways: what we call a big box store like Home Depot Expo , Best Buy (you'll see these in malls), Sears (which has a repeatedly well rated and reliable house brand) or a smaller specialized appliance dealer if you're going upscale. Look around and see which brands suit your budget then you can ask about those here. Expo has a very wide range of products and are very good for looking at the overall picture. One thing that can be surprisingly important is where you buy. Service and waranty issues go through the dealer. So I would suggest buying from someone very near where you live and a dealer which does a brisk business (if you can discern that) in the brand you buy so you get the benefit of their buying power in terms of service. That effects waranty repairs and a replacement appliance in the unlikely event that should arise. We've seen occasional cases here where someone bought too far from home (perhaps to save the tax) with a mess when things went wrong. Good luck!

When I was looking at my oven cabinet today - I noticed something. The oven cabinet is a deep cabinet. With a shallow cabinet on top (flush with the front of the oven cabinet - but there's a space behind it). So - basically - the hot air from the oven can go straight out of the oven cabinet up into the kitchen. Perhaps this prevents heat-buildup in the oven cabinet which can lead to other problems. steff1 - were you getting parts under the original manufacturer's 1 year warranty? Frankly - I don't understand why any appliance shouldn't work for a year without needing service. Although apparently a lot of them don't these days . With regard to self-cleaning oven racks in the oven - I've done it for years. Yes - they won't shine after they're cleaned - but they'll be clean - and perfectly functional (except for those new full extension racks that have plastic glides and the like - they shouldn't be self-cleaned - parts will melt - I'll probably remove them and put them in the closet). Last thing in the world I want to do is spend my time cleaning oven racks - or any tedious cleaning I can avoid. I love my cook top - because I can scrape off all the cooked on gunk with a razor blade. Apply a little cook top polish - good as new. I like to cook :) - don't like to clean :(. BTW - my choices were somewhat limited because I wanted a white oven (e.g., no Monogram available in white). I have a "white on white" kitchen - and one stainless appliance would probably stick out like a sore thumb. All the other appliances are working fine. And considering the reliability of new appliances these days - I won't replace my old ones until they're dead (or any needed repairs don't make economic sense). I did buy the KA at Sears today. Delivery in about 3 weeks. Will report back after installation and use. Robyn
