A 'blast from the past'
Comments (8)I don't know when I've enjoyed a rose slide show so much. It brought back wonderful memories of the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden which I visited many times and love more than any other botanical garden. The El Cerrito Rose Festival was a great reminder of the one time I was fortunate enough to attend. It was an unforgettable experience. Putting faces to well-known names was also very satisfying. Seeing Miriam Wilkins whose rose garden I visited when she was so much younger was very poignant. I remember buying a guilt-inducing number of books from Barbara Worl at her wonderful store. Truly a trip down memory lane for me. Thank you so much Malcolm! Ingrid...See MoreAnother blast from the past: 1956 MCM
Comments (4)I really like this home, and I bet the MCM fanatics in the Bay Area will go bonkers with it. The lines and the relationship to the big lot are great. It gives me hope that the new owners won't destroy it in a remuddle....See MoreBlast from the past
Comments (11)Thanks for sharing Nancy. My mother grew up in the Riverside/ Moreno Valley area and told me stories of all the citrus groves that used to cover the hillsides. I’m not that old but do remember driving to visit my grandparents in the 1980’s and seeing many groves along the 60 freeway between the 10/60 split and the 215 freeway. Now it’s car dealerships, a sketchers distribution center and an Amazon warehouse. No more rows of citrus or farmhouses. I only live an hour away in the Coachella Valley and to this day when I drive through that corridor with my kids in the car I say to them “I remember when this all used to be citrus groves as far as the eye could see.” I get that blank stare as my kids lift their heads from their iPhones and kindles and look around at the houses and industrial warehouses like I’m crazy. Thanks for sharing your story, it brought me back to my childhood. Evan...See MoreFunny blast from the past. So you want to grow a gardenia.
Comments (18)bossyvossy: I still do (hand-pick lawn weeds) -- it's something we kids all did as part of our chores AKA family contribution ADA do as your told. After 26 years at our current house, I really don't care (much) if the neighbors laugh. If the weather's nice, to me pulling weeds can actually be quite therapeutic -- don't ask my back, though, after a day of pulling! :) I started to read the old gardenia thread, and had to close it, lest I jinx myself. For whatever reason, I planted a gardenia in our yard ~ 20 years ago. I pretty much do nothing to it, and it has somehow thrived despite my neglect. The flush of blooms doesn't last long, between the thrips and the immediate heatwave that comes through right about bloom time. (It's ~ 3' x 4' and flocked with about 100 blooms -- with 20-30 buds waiting in the wings.) It's one of those bushes that I do contemplate pulling: blooms only once a year, then just sits there. :) Perhaps my butterfly garden expansion will push me to remove the gardenia (or at least move it somewhere else)....See MoreRosie1949
