Venting experts - can you vent through the roof?
Comments (10)DH and I installed a vent in our upstairs bathroom, venting through the roof. Did it ourselves - no leaks. We have cold, snowy winters and stormy summers - no leaks. My Mom's house was built in 1977, range hood vented though the roof. This is nothing new. What does your friend's GC do, exactly? I have a vaulted ceiling, and the only issue I can see with venting the range hood is enclosing the vent line so it looks halfway decent. I've see photos of them (standard range hood, with cabinets above) cased in with drywall, bricks, and wood. Again, not rocket surgery....See MoreRoofing - need expert advice, please
Comments (4)Well, regarding the tree-rats if you are willing to experiment: Buy a couple bottles of original formula Pine-Sol and a package of small shallow disposable bowls. Take them into the attic and place a bowl filled with undiluted PineSol so that the bowl itself cannot be reached by children or pets (in a secured cardboard box is usually okay) every 20 feet along the perimeter and near any vents. Check every couple weeks and refill as needed. I make no promises but this has worked well for me and for several acquaintances, used in tool sheds as well as in garages, attics and crawlspaces. I'm guessing that the aroma is a deterrent, but in the past 30+ years the only times I've been invaded by critters is when I've forgotten to refill. BTW, if you have heat ducts nearby and any have a pinhole leak, the smell WILL transmit through you house! Just open windows to air it out - after you find and fix the leak....See Moreneed a cedar expert for roof question
Comments (5)A 50-year warranty for wood and asphalt shingles is a marketing tool that indicates what relative position a roofing material has in a manufacturer's line up. It represents a higher quality but little else because few people live in a home 40 to 50 years and the warranty is usually for material only, and prorated. If a roof failed after 45 years they would sell you new shingles at a 10% discount and you would have to pay for deivery and installation, if you could prove it wasn't the installer's fault. They would offer 60 years if they thought consumers would believe it. Manufacturers of asphalt shingles used to use weight per square as an indicator of quality but the substitution of light-weight synthetic bases in the 80's put an end to that and warranties became the new measure of quality. I suppose wood shingle manufacturers had to adopt the same strategy in order to compete. Thicker, heavier shingles are definitely worth considering, but not for their longer warranties....See MoreRoofing experts: Best roof shingle for "true black"?
Comments (5)Thanks, everyone. It does look like a more basic 3-tab might be the way to go. Right now we're leaning toward the GAF Royal Sovereign "Charcoal." Hopefully we can do some side-to-side shingle comparisons in the coming few weeks. Our builder has already given us a Certainteed sample board, which started this search....See MoreRelated Professionals
