Replacing a vanity cabinet only in the bathroom

We are purchasing a new home that has an undesirable thermafoil cabinet in the master bathroom which I would like to replace. However, I want to keep the floor, countertop, and sink in tact. I only want to swap out the cabinet. Does anyone know how easy/difficult this is? Any suggestions on how to go about this?

It's about as easy/difficult as driving a car,snow skiing,playing French Horn and styling hair,nothing to it after you learn how and do it a few times.

You can get a cabinetmaker to build a custom cabinet for you. Will be a turnkey build, they will swap everything for you. Will also be a tad expensive. Contact a few cabinetmakers in your area with photos and ideas of what you are looking for in a cabinet

My parents house is like that, but there’s a wall with a wide doorway into the area with the vanity, so it’s open but also easy to close off by just putting a curtain rail up. It’s also oriented to the room such that if you only use enough light at the vanity to wash your hands for a midnight potty run, it really isn’t enough to bother someone in the bed if you place the bed sensibly. Getting ready in the morning would be trickier if you needed to do makeup and so on so needed proper lighting, so that’s where a screen or a curtain would come in.

I think it will look fine either way....if it is lower, you have a dedicated/defined area as your makeup vanity. If it is the same height, that space may or may not be used as a vanity and will just become part of the overall sink area. Only you can decide which will work better for you. A counter-height stool COULD look a little strange in your bathroom and is not the norm, but if you like it that's all that matters.

Don't try to match. It'll just look like a bad patch. Make it look deliberate, treat it as a feature. Have fun with it. Create a border around the vanity and fill the remainder with mosaic tile in the colors of your existing tile mixed with colors of the rest of your bathroom. Make sure you remove enough old tile, linoleum or wood flooring around the new vanity to leave enough room for the border as well as some of the new fill tile to show. Just like with an area rug, you want to be generous in size. If you have beige tile and say, black accents in the bathroom, you might want to choose a solid black tile for the border, then you could use mosaic tiles in beige tones and sprinkel in some black ones to fill the rest. Alternatively, if you find tile that almost (but not quite) matches your existing tile, you could do the border in mosaic tile, or a contrasting rectangular tile and fill the center with the almost matching tile. I only advise you to do that though if the border helps to visually separate the tiles enough to make the slight difference disappear. The sky's the limit. Good luck!

I would replace both counters and sinks. The sinks do not match so even if you do (sort of) match the brown counter they will not look like they go together.

The biggest problem will be matching the footprint, especially if the cabinet is older(20+).

You need to have the dimensions of the counter top(width and length), the footprint(toe kick models are different from the box dimensions), and the height of the current cabinet. Plus the design has to be right for putting the counter top on.

Remove the top(with sink installed), find out what fasteners were used to install the box, remove and pull out.

To install the new one, mark and drill necessary holes for plumbing, find wall studs, set the box in place, use cabinet installation screws to mount, install top, hook up plumbing and caulk.

Average time is three hours max. Pros can do all that in an hour. First time DIYers need 6-8 hours. :-)

Give a mouse a cookie.... If the room has one of those wall to wall mirrors resting on the countertop or backsplash, and it's glued rather than clipped, then you just escalated into a complete mini refresh. Those don't come off well. And they have to come off in order to remove the vanity top. And both the mirror and vanity top have to come out in order to replace the vanity. Which needs a plumber. And since you're removing the vanity top, there is no reason to stick with it. Replace it. Same with the mirror. Patch the drywall that will be damaged, and paint the whole space. Since you're patching and painting, that's the time to replace the towel bars and TP holders. And the lighting. If you want sconces on either side of a hung mirror, right before you patch and paint the walls is when you do that job. This is when you bring in the electrician.

Now the mouse has half of that cookie package gone. Is that enough to go ahead with the rest?
