Buying from Johnny's Seeds
Comments (5)Since no one has replied to you I will. I have never purchased seeds from Johnny's select but I am considering it myself. I personally am interested in their white pumpkin called Valenciano. I stumbled across them last fall. They are incredibly heavy fruits, definitely by far the heaviest for their size. Anyway back to your question, all of the pumpkins you listed look great. If PM is a problem then you should definitely go with a resistant variety. I almost always have powdery mildew by then end of the season. For me it only seems to attack the plants once they are mature and already have several fruits growing on them. Because the fruit has already set I am never concerned by PM. I've noticed that the old leaves (closest to the base of the plant) are the ones to be affected first. So at the first sign of PM on a leaf I just cut it right off to keep the plant looking healthy awhile longer. By this point the plants are mature and have so many growing points that I know more leaves are being added to the plant than I am removing on any day. After awhile of removing leaves the PM finally wins and I just let my plants finish their life cycle....See MoreA couple of 'normal store bought tomato' questions
Comments (7)Another issue, especially with winter shipped in tomatoes, is that it's common to pick the tomatoes at the mature green stage and then gas them with ethylene gas which initiates a ripening process, but in doing that it's mainly a color change and any inherent taste has little or no time to develop since the fruits are off the vine and can't synthesize any/few of the about 400 organic compounds that have been IDed as being associated with taste, but not yet isolated as specific organic compounds. Just blips on a gas chromotography display. If you Google this issue you'll see that some varieties are more gassable, if that's a word, so those are the ones most used by large commercial operations that do gas fruits. Fruits produce their own ethylene gas which initiates a ripening sequence in the normal course of events, so artificially gassing them, while it's not natural, is one way of coloring them up. Comments (10)Last summer I tried Giant Belgium for the 3rd time in 20 years. Seeds were from Burpees. My garden in eastern central Ohio produced the most and best flavored tomatoes it has in 5 years, even with far too much rain. Mushroom manure, ground phosphate rock, Actinovate root drench and foliar sprays, potassium bicarbonate and corn meal soak sprays all must have made some contribution but I'm not smart enough to sort it out. Giant Belgian produced just as it had for me in the prior 2 tries. Maybe 3 or 4 distorted fruits, lots of drops, early demise of the plant from early blight. It just doesn't seem to want to do well for me in this area. So I will not wrestle with it again--3 strikes and it's out! Pruden's Purple, Red Barn, Eli Red, Lil's Favorite, Big Beef Hybrid, Coustralee, Lil's Favorite, Box Car Willie, and Ukranian Oxheart stole the show. KBX and Dixie Golden Giant were also nice for yellows but Golden Queen (grown in a 6 gal container) was a disappointment while Lemon Boy sitting in the adjacent container did fantastic! Indian Moon, Mozark, Black Plum, Blue Ridge Mountain, and a Yellow Oxheart grown in my PA garden were also impressive. Pretty much all the varieties mentioned above have been super performers for me over many years, though Mozark and Indian Moon are only in their 1st or 2nd year for me. Comments (19)Like Dave I am trying the Escamillo peppers from Johnny's this year. It is a sweet green to yellow corno di torro type. Also ordered the Cornito Giallo which is a smaller orange corno di torro type. These 2 along with the Carmen I grew last year will give me sweet red, yellow, and orange peppers without having to wait for bells to ripen. Not planting any bell peppers this year. I also ordered Muir, Dragoon, Breen, Rhazes, and Sparx lettuce per some recommendations here on Garden web. I grew out all except for the Sparx this winter under lights in my basement in 4" containers. I have been really pleased with the production and taste of all 4 varieties. The Dragoon is actually even forming nice tight romaine hearts as I type after 8 weeks from seeding. I started some of each lettuce type on Friday to be planted out the week of Easter....See Moredb6040
