Stake or not to stake (Naga)

Hi All

long time reader but first time poster.

this season is my first attempt at growing a Dorset Naga from seed.

at the end of the first month of summer she's about a foot taller than my largest red savino habanero plant but currently has around 40 flowers growing (this is drastically increasingly though)

the Habs have around 100+ flowers/pods at this point.

Total height is probably just about 3 feet. There's a major fork at two feet and a sizeable bend about half a foot up the stem.

the stem is about two inches thick.

couple of questions for the Naga growers...

1) its end of December so is it on track in your opinion? (Based in sydney)

2) would you stake it? The bend and the rapidly growing buds concern me if it keeps growing height wise. It's double in size in two weeks

would you stake it? ....Yes.

I usually put a stake in the center of my 5 gal. pails but I delayed tying up this plant & you can see what happened overnight because of a bit of wind.

Yah, I would stake it. No reason not to really. If it doesn't need the extra support, then no big deal. If it does wind up needing the extra support, then yo will be happy it was in place when the plant needed it. After a wind storm, it may be too late.

If you planted them as a clump, you may put stakes around perimeter and tie a twine to make a circle. If you planted them as a row, you need to place stake at the beginning and the end of the row and a few in between (depending on a lenghts of your row) and tie a twine all around. It doesn't make sense to stake individual flowers. You would need to do staking when they'll be 18-24" tall depending on variety and move twine up as they grow. In your zone 10 they will live for many years without digging and replanting, so if it would be me, I'd plant them as deep as 10-12", not a 6". Deep planting helps to either completely eliminate or just reduce to ocassional staking of individual plants for shorter varieties (up to 30" tall). 36 to 48" tall varieties probably would need staking anyway.

Many experts now say to stake nothing. If where you planted, the root ball cannot hold the top steady in the wind, you will need to stake it. With a 9' tree, you will probably need to stake. Usually 2 stakes are sufficient. Leave about an inch or two of slack so the tree can move some. Every 60-90 days loosen to provide another inch or two of slack. The goal is to remove the stakes completely after a year.

Take the stake off and discard it unless it is a plant that needs to be staked for height. If that is the case a permanent stake is required or it will lay down. What is the cultivar name??? Dave

I believe the assumption was that the trees would be planted in the raised bed along the fenceline. And that is a very narrow width to accommodate fruits trees other than those trained as espaliers.........

I would also Stake or cage it. It's going to get taller and wider and when it begins to branch out, it will really test the strength of the branches. I usually cage them and supplement with stakes/dead tree branches, etc, to help keep the branches from breaking due to the weight.

1--- Yep... looking good. Still looks a some ways away from producing toms of tiny pods of pain, but looks like it's about to start.

2---Best use for a TOMATO cage??? Peppers!
