Hyacinth question - want to put Christmas blooming H. outside
Comments (3)If it was intended to bloom at Christmas, then must have been pre-chilled and forced. Forced bulbs are not the easiest to generate further blooms from and even under the best condtions will take a season or two to buld up steam and rebloom on a normal schedule and in the traditional setting. If forced in water (as opposed to a potting medium), it is very unlikely to rebloom and best just to toss. Either case you are not likely to see blooms on it soon, certainly not this summer. Funny the impression one develops about places they have never been - I would never have thought Iceland would be a zone 5, although I do know you can have some extraordinarily lovely gardens there....See Morechristmas cactus blooming apr.14,14
Comments (5)Hi again....I also have a smaller plant and it is getting a lot of buds on it also..I know that cool or cold weather help set buds...and here in Minnesota we are having a very long cold (winter) season...its still freezing at night here...and my plant is by the window...I don't know I just hope it doesn't over do it and next year I get no flowers...but they are pretty and I love all the flowers....linda...See MoreChristmas Cactus blooming again
Comments (14)Hello again, you said you used a succulent soil mix...then mention the Palm and Citrus mix...but neither of those are succulents you do realise?! I'm not certain if that would harm the plant in any way as I'm no expert on these matters, but others who may chime in definitely are. I've just grown CC's and EC's for some time. I think the easiest way to sort out which is which is generally all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti...think this is correct! So yes, CC's and EC's are still a type of cacti, and epiphytic ones like I said that grow on trees etc. On seeing your pic it does look like an EC to me as they often bloom a scarlet orange colour like your bud and as stated above, once that opens you will tell for sure. Here is one of my EC's in bloom recently, it's my new pink one... and here's my CC, the one with the bud, it's not visible but it's there! You can see the 'leaves' are very different to each other, the flowers are even more different too. I'm not convinced there are 2 separate plants of different kinds in the pot, but that's just my thoughts and I may well be wrong, lol! Has it got 2 individulal trunks can you tell? A north facing window may not be ideal, they do like sun, but not intense direct sun. Try a search on here and the CC and EC threads will help you further I'm sure or even google them.
