worried about asbestos in flooring
Comments (4)Great. Thanks for the responses. I am going to cover the 9x9 tiles. But when i took up the kitchen floor there was a seam in the middle of the floor where the two peices of plywood met. It looks like the person used some type of filler/glue over this seam. it covers about 4 inches on either side of the seam and it looks black or dark grey. Has anyone heard of using cutback glue on seams? its just this dark stuff over top of the seam and am concerned that it might be cutback glue which i hear has asbestos. I will try to post a picture. I am going to grab a piece and have it tested but was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of using that for a filler. Or do you think it would be a type of lever compound or something. Thanks. this stuff is driving me NUTS!!...See MoreAsbestos in sheet flooring?
Comments (6)You probably have nothing to worry about. Any dust that was released into the house air is gone by now. Even wood dust, can be carcinogenic, but to lose sleep over your casual exposure (if there was any of consequence) is obsessive. Have the home air tested, if you think that will set your mind at ease. Give up smoking, if you engage in that dirty habit. And, consider avoiding trips in the family automobile on interstate highways...now 'that' is a hazardous and life-threatening activity. Your one-time exposure is probably of no consequence to the health of you or your family members....See MoreVery worried about possible asbestos exposure?
Comments (8)Jane- Many people read about asbestos and get spooked, which sounds like what you have done. Don't get me wrong, asbestos is bad stuff; I know because I spent most of my career as an environmental engineer working in this area. However, in your case, I think it is unlikely you had any exposure from that work in the hallway. If they were removing asbestos insulation from old ducts and furnaces, or popcorn ceilings, then, yes. But just because they tore out what looks like a lot of old plaster and made a lot of dust means nothing. There may have been some lead dust in the air from the old paint, but that is a different story. As far as getting rid of your possessions, that's the uninformed panic talking...there is no need for that. (Even if there had been asbestos dust involved, a cleaning with an HVAC vacuum would have taken care of that, if it were necessary.) Please, you have been reading a bunch of scary stuff on the Internet and, having no background to properly assess the situation, have gotten upset. Take a deep breath and relax. Many people are ignorant of environmental risks and get into trouble unknowingly; in your case, you may be over-aware and too concerned about possibilities. I'm not trying to make light of your concern; I'm just trying to get you out of panic mode on this. It's fine and you will be fine....See MoreNeed Advice - freaking out
Comments (3)Stop freaking out. You may or may not have been exposed to asbestos. If you were, and you breathed in the drywall dust you may or may not have issues later in life. The small amount of wall removed, and the short period of duration to the potential exposure are in in your favor if it was indeed asbestos. I am not saying to take it seriously if indeed you start to develop respiratory symptoms, but chances are you will be fine....See More- 7 years ago
